Novak Djokovic was born on May 22, 1987, in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. He started playing tennis at the age of four and was soon identified as a prodigy by Yugoslavian tennis great Janko Tipsarevic. When he was six, Djokovic’s family moved to the village of Macesen, where he trained with youth coach Marian Vajda. At age 12, he began working with longtime coach Niki Pilic in Germany.

Djokovic turned professional in 2003, at the age of 16. He made his Grand Slam debut at the 2004Australian Open, where he received a wildcard to enter the main draw. His best result in a singles tournament that year came at Wimbledon, where he reached the third round before losing to Mario Ančić in four sets.
In 2005, Djokovic entered Roland Garros as a qualifier and reached the third round before losing to Guillermo Coria in straight sets. At Wimbledon, he again drew Ančić in the first round and lost in four sets. He also competed in tournaments at Umag and Metz that year but did not progress past the second round in either event.

Djokovic has won 15 Grand Slam singles titles, the fourth most in history and the most of any active male player.
