What Is A Game In Tennis?
Contents
If you’re new to tennis, you may be wondering what a “game” is. A game in tennis is simply a unit of play, and it consists of four points. The first player to win four points wins the game.
The game of tennis
The game of tennis is a sport played between two players (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a strung racquet to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over a net into the opponent’s court. The modern game of tennis originated in Birmingham, England, in the late 19th century as “lawn tennis”.
The scoring system
In tennis, a game is won by the first player to win four points. Points are awarded depending on who serves the ball, with the server always starting the game at 0 and their opponents starting at 15, 30 or 40 (depending on whether they have already won or lost a point).
If both players score the same number of points during a game, this is called a ‘deuce’ and play continues until one player either ‘wins’ the game by scoring two consecutive points, or ‘loses’ it by losing two consecutive points. If the score reaches ‘deuce’ three times in a row, then player who served last will serve again and play will continue until one player wins or loses the game.
The ‘advantage’ in tennis is when one player has won a point and so has the chance to win the next point and thus win the game. If both players have won three points apiece (i.e. it is ‘deuce’), then whoever wins the next point will have the ‘advantage’.
The playing area
A tennis court is the playing surface for the sport of tennis. It is a rectangular flat surface with a low net stretched across the center. The same surface can be used to play both singles and doubles matches. A variety of surfaces can be used to create a tennis court, each with its own characteristics which affect the playing style of the game.
The equipment
In tennis, a game is won by the first player to win four points in total, with at least a two-point margin over the opponent. A player wins a point by putting the ball into the opponent’s court so that the opponent cannot hit it back before it bounces twice. The modern game of tennis originated in Birmingham, England, in the late 19th century as “lawn tennis”. It had close connections both to various field (“lawn”) games such as croquet and bowls as well as to the older racket sport of real tennis. During most of the 19th century, in fact, the term “tennis” referred to real tennis, not lawn tennis.
The history of tennis
Though often associated with the nobles of medieval England, tennis probably originated in the 12th century in northern France among the monastic orders. The French word tenez, meaning take or hold, probably gave tennis its name. In the 13th century, Louis IX and his court were playing a form of tennis in the palace of Fontainebleau, and Louis was said to have enjoyed the game so much that he had sheets of parchment nailed to the walls so that he could play indoors.
The origins of tennis
No one knows exactly when or where tennis began, but most historians believe it originated from a 12th- or 13th-century French handball game called jeu de paume (“game of the palm”). In jeu de paume, players used their bare hands to hit a ball back and forth over a net stretched across the center of a court.
By the 16th century, rackets (or bats) were introduced to the game, and it soon spread from France to England. In 1874, Major Walter Wingfield invented a new game called “sphairistike,” which combined elements of both tennis and badminton. Wingfield’s game quickly became popular in England and Wales, and by the 1880s it had spread to the United States.
In 1926, the United States Lawn Tennis Association (now the USTA) codified the rules of tennis, making it the modern game we know today.
The development of tennis
The origins of tennis are not known, but it is thought that the game originated in Egypt, Greece or Rome and was then called ‘lawn tennis’. In the early 11th century, French monks started playing a game called ‘jeu de paume’ ( literally, ‘game of the palm’) in which they hit a ball with their bare hands. In the 12th century, they started using gloves to protect their hands. By the 13th century, they had started using bats; and by the end of the century, they were playing a game similar to the one we know today.
In 1480, King Louis XI of France decreed that all courts should have netting around them so that people could not interfere with the games. The first tennis balls were made of cloth stuffed with human hair or wool. The game then spread to Italy and England. In England, it became very popular with royalty and in 1873 Major Walter Wingfield patented a game which he called ‘sphairistike’ ( Greek for ‘ball-playing’). This was then shortened to ‘tennis’.
Tennis was first played in Wimbledon in 1877 and the first Wimbledon Championships were held in 1877 for men’s singles only. In 1884, women’s singles were added and in 1913 mixed doubles were introduced. Tennis soon became an international sport with tournaments being held all over the world. The four Grand Slam tournaments are: Wimbledon (England), the French Open (France), the Australian Open (Australia) and the US Open (USA).
The modern game of tennis
The game of tennis took its modern form in 1873 when Major Walter Clopton Wingfield designed a standard set of rules to be used on his croquet lawn at Nantclwyd Hall, Llangollen, in Wales. That first Wimbledon tournament was played two years later, on 9 July 1877. The winner of the inaugural event was Spencer Gore, an amateur cricketer who defeated Willie Renshaw in the final.
While early Wimbledon matches were played in a best-of-three sets format, the first Wimbledon men’s singles championship was decided by a five-set match in 1881. The number of sets has since been increased to the current best-of-five format for all four Grand Slam tournaments (Wimbledon, the French Open, the US Open, and the Australian Open).
Tennis became an Olympic sport at the inaugural Summer Games in Athens in 1896. Men’s singles and doubles competitions have been held at every Summer Olympics since then, as well as mixed doubles from 1912 onward.
Tennis today
The game of tennis has changed a lot since it was first played in the late 1800s. The game today is much faster and more physical than it was in the past. The game is also played on different surfaces, which can affect how the ball bounces and how players must adjust their playing style.
The professional game
The professional game of tennis is played on a rectangular court. The dimensions of the court are defined by the International Tennis Association (ITA) and are the same for all professional matches. The court is 78 feet (23.77 meters) long and 27 feet (8.23 meters) wide for singles matches, and 84 feet (25.60 meters) long and 36 feet (10.97 meters) wide for doubles matches. The baseline, which is the back boundary line of the court, is 21 feet (6.40 meters) from the net for singles matches and 23 feet 9 inches (7.24 meters) from the net for doubles matches.
The amateur game
An amateur is a person who does not receive payment for their time, effort and skill in playing tennis. They may receive reimbursement for playing tennis related expenses such as entry fees, coaching and equipment. Playing tennis as an amateur means that you can play in tournaments approved by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) without losing your amateur status.
Amateur tennis players cannot play in professional tournaments unless they get special permission from the USTA. If you want to compete in a professional tournament, you must first turn pro. This usually happens when a player decides to accept prize money for playing in a tournament.
If you’re not sure whether you want to turn pro, you can try to get into professional tournaments by going through the pre-qualifying or qualifying rounds. Pre-qualifying is a series of matches leading up to the main draw of a professional tournament. To be eligible to play in pre-qualifying, you must have an International Tennis Federation (ITF) world ranking.
If you don’t have an ITF world ranking, you can try to qualify for a professional tournament by playing in the qualifying rounds. The qualifying rounds are also referred to as the “feed-in” draw because the winners of these matches “feed” into the main draw of the professional tournament.
Once you’re in the main draw of a professional tournament, you can play against other professionals and earn prize money if you win your matches. The amount of prize money varies from tournament to tournament and it is usually divided up among the winners, runner-ups and semifinalists.
Tennis in the Olympics
Tennis has been an Olympic sport since the inaugural edition of the modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. It was dropped from the program after the 1924 Paris Olympics, but returned as a Demonstration Sport at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and has been played as an official medal sport since the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
The tournaments are governed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and take place every four years, in conjunction with the Summer Olympic Games. The men’s and women’s singles and doubles tournaments are contested over a best-of-three sets format, while the mixed doubles event is played over a best-of-two sets format.
