Serena Jameka Williams was born on September 26, 1981, in Saginaw, Michigan, to Richard Williams and Oracene Price. She is the youngest of Price’s five daughters, all of whom were born within a span of seven years. Richard, who is African American, is a formersharecropper from Louisiana who met Price, who is African American with Native American ancestry, while the two were working as stepsiblings at a drive-in restaurant in Michigan.

Serena’s early professional years

Serena Williams began her professional tennis career in 1995 at the age of 14. She played her first professional tournament in October of that year, at the Bank of the West Classic in Oakland, California. She lost her first match against Shahar Perls, but went on to win her next three matches in the qualifying rounds. She then lost to World No. 2 Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in the Round of 32.

In 1996, Williams competed in her first Grand Slam tournament at the 1996 Australian Open. She defeatedworld No. 12 Monica Seles in the second round before losing to World No. 4 Iva Majoliin the third round. Later that year, she reached her first WTA Tour semifinal at the Gand Slam Cup (now known as the WTA Elite Trophy), where she again lost to Majoli.
