The BNP Paribas Open is an annual tennis tournament held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California, United States. The tournament is a Masters 1000 event on the men’s ATP Tour and a Premier Mandatory event on the women’s WTA Tour. The tournament has been held every year since 1974.
In 1987 and 1988, it was combined with the women’s Virginia Slims of California and was called the Grand Slam of tennis. In 2001, the event became one of only two elite tournaments (the other being Miami) outside of Europe or North America to have both a Premier Mandatory WTA event and an ATP Masters 1000 Series event, which together make one of only five “Premier” joint events in professional tennis (the other three are located in Madrid, Beijing and Shanghai).
