Djokovic’s Road to the Final
Novak Djokovic started his campaign at Roland Garros with a comfortable 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 win over Mikael Ymer. The world No. 1 fishtailed a little in his second match, coming back from two sets to one down to beat Lorenzo Sonego 4-6, 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-4. He then defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets to reach the fourth round where he thrashed Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Standing in Djokovic’s way of the semifinals was fellow countryman and 17th seed Dusan Lajovic. The world No. 1 showed who was boss with a routine 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 victory. Djokovic then booked his place in a record ninth French Open final with a battling 4-6, 7-5, 6_1, 7_5 victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Nadal’s Road to the Final
Rafael Nadal entered the 2020 French Open seeking his record-equaling 20th major title. The Spaniard had not won a major tournament since the 2019 French Open, and he had lost in the semifinals at Roland Garros in both 2018 and 2019. Nadal was seeded second at the 2020 French Open, behind only Novak Djokovic.
Nadal began his campaign with a straight-sets victory over Egor Gerasimov in the first round. He then defeated Federico Coria, seeded 30th, in four sets in the second round. Nadal dropped just eight games in his next two matches, defeating Juan Ignacio Londero and Sebastian Korda to reach the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Nadal faced eleventh-seeded Diego Schwartzman, who had beaten Nadal in their most recent meeting at the Italian Open just weeks before. Schwartzman took the first set off of Nadal before losing the next three and being eliminated from the tournament.
Nadal’s semifinal opponent was fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was playing in his first French Open semifinals. Tsitsipas won the first set 6–4 before Nadal stormed back to win three straight sets and advancing to his record 13th French Open final.
