Djokovic Wins Miami Open
For the first time since 2016, Novak Djokovic has won the Miami Open. He defeated Roger Federer in the final in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. This is Djokovic’s second time winning the Miami Open and he has now won a total of 14 Grand Slam titles.
Djokovic Defeats Federer in the Finals
In a thrilling Miami Open final that featured two of the greatest tennis players in history, Novak Djokovic emerged victorious over Roger Federer in straight sets, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3. With the win, Djokovic claimed his seventh Miami Open title and fourth consecutive ATP Masters 1000 crown.
Djokovic got off to a slow start against Federer, losing the first set tiebreaker 7-1. But Djokovic regrouped and took control of the match in the second set. He broke Federer’s serve twice en route to a 6-3 victory, clinching the match and the Miami Open title.
It was a rematch of last year’s Miami Open final, which Djokovic also won in straight sets. With the win, Djokovic has now beaten Federer three times in a row and five out of their last six meetings.
Djokovic’s Road to the Finals
Djokovic began his journey in the Miami Open with a first-round bye. In the second round, he faced France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and defeated him in straight sets. This sent Djokovic into the third round where he defeated France’s Jeremy Chardy also in straight sets.
In the fourth round, Djokovic played Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro. This was a rematch of last year’s Wimbledon semi-final which Djokovic won in five sets. Del Potro was forced to retire from the match in the third set due to an injury, giving Djokovic a spot in the quarter-finals.
In the quarter-finals, Djokovic faced Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund and won in straight sets once again. This brought him to his semi-final match against Russia’s Karen Khachanov which he also won in straight sets, earning himself a spot in the finals.
In the finals, Djokovic played Spain’s Rafael Nadal for a repeat of last year’s Miami Open final. Nadal had previously beaten Roger Federer in the semi-finals in a rematch of their Australian Open final earlier this year. However, Djokovic proved to be too much for Nadal and won the match in straight sets, resulting in him becoming both the reigning Wimbledon and Miami Open champion.
Naomi Osaka Wins Women’s Singles Title
Naomi Osaka of Japan has won the 2019 Miami Open, defeating Bianca Andreescu of Canada 6-3, 6-4 in the final. This is Osaka’s second title of the year, having previously won the Australian Open in January.
Osaka Defeats Serena Williams in the Finals
In a rematch of the 2018 U.S. Open final, Naomi Osaka defeated Serena Williams 6-3, 6-2 to win the 2019 Miami Open on Saturday night.
The victory was Osaka’s second straight major title, as she also won the Australian Open in January. She is now the first woman to win back-to-back majors since Serena did so herself in 2015.
This was also the first time that Osaka had beaten Williams in a head-to-head meeting. In their previous match at the U.S. Open, Osaka won in straight sets, but that match will perhaps be best remembered for the on-court confrontation between Williams and chair umpire Carlos Ramos that resulted in Williams being given a game penalty.
On Saturday, there was no such drama, as Osaka was simply too good for an injured and below-her-best Williams.Williams had entered the tournament with a knee injury and had not played a competitive match since she withdrew from the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open two weeks ago. That lack of match sharpness showed at times during her semifinal win over Anastasija Sevastova on Friday, and it was even more evident in the final against Osaka.”
Osaka’s Road to the Finals
In the final, she defeated Petra Kvitova in straight sets to claim her second consecutive Miami Open title, and third Premier Mandatory title overall. Osaka thus became the first player since Serena Williams in 2013 to win back-to-back Premier Mandatory tournaments.
