The 2021 US Open was a tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts. It was the 141st edition of the US Open, the second Grand Slam event of the year, and took place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City.
Novak Djokovic
In a matchup that lived up to its top billing, Djokovic outlasted rival Rafael Nadal to earn his ninth US Open men’s singles title. The victory also saw Djokovic reclaim the world No. 1 ranking from Nadal. Djokovic’s Triumph was his 19th major singles title, moving him into sole possession of third place on the all-time list, behind only Roger Federer (20) and Nadal (20).
Won his 18th Slam title
Novak Djokovic defeated Daniil Medvedev in the men’s final at the US Open on Sunday, winning his 18th Slam title and his ninth trophy at Flushing Meadows.
The world No 1 was in complete control as he triumphed 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in two hours and four minutes to add to his Wimbledon and Australian Open crowns this year.
It was a first meeting between the two men but there was little doubt who the better player was from the outset as Djokovic stormed into a 5-0 lead in the first set.
Won his ninth Australian Open
In 2021, Djokovic won his ninth Australian Open singles title, defeating Medvedev in the final in straight sets. This was Djokovic’s third consecutive Australian Open singles title, tying Roy Emerson’s record of most consecutive Australian Open titles. Emerson won his titles in 1961–63; Djokovic had previously won the tournament in 2011, 2012 and 2013. With the win, Djokovic became the first man in the Open Era to win nine Australian Opens, surpassing Emerson and Federer (who each have six). He also extended his all-time record for most Australian Open titles.
Won his second Wimbledon title
Novak Djokovic won his second Wimbledon title with a straight sets victory over Roger Federer in the final.
The Serb, who also won at the All England Club in 2011, dominated the contest from start to finish as he won 7-6 (7-1) 6-7 (10-12) 6-4 6-3 in front of a capacity crowd on Centre Court.
It was arepeat of last year’s final, which Djokovic also won in straight sets, and saw the 32-year-old become the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win Wimbledon back-to-back.
Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal of Spain won the men’s singles title at the US Open Tennis Tournament 2021. This is his fourth US Open title and nineteenth Grand Slam title overall. He defeated Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the final in straight sets.
Won his 20th Slam title
Rafael Nadal of Spain won his 20th Slam title at the 2021 US Open, defeating Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the finals. Nadal is now second on the all-time list behind only Roger Federer, who has won 21 Slam titles. Nadal has won 13 French Open titles, tying him with Margaret Court for the most ever in the history of tennis.
Won his 13th French Open
Rafael Nadal of Spain won his 13th French Open singles title on Sunday, beating Novak Djokovic of Serbia 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 in the final.
The victory gave Nadal a record-extending 20th Grand Slam singles title, tying him with Roger Federer for the most in men’s tennis history. It was Nadal’s 94th win at the French Open, breaking a tie with Federer for the most at any major tournament.
Won his sixth US Open title
Rafael Nadal captured his sixth US Open title with a hard-fought victory over Daniil Medvedev in an epic final. The Spaniard overcame a two-set deficit to win in five sets, 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4, and claim his 19th Grand Slam title. It was an emotional victory for Nadal, who dedicated the win to his late coach and mentor Tony Trujillo.
Roger Federer
Swiss professional tennis player Roger Federer won the 2021 US Open by defeating American player Reilly Opelka in the final. This was Federer’s second US Open title and his record-extending 20th Grand Slam singles title overall.
Won his 21st Slam title
In winning his 21st Slam title, Federer has now drawn level with Pete Sampras for the most in history, and is just one Slam title shy of Nadal’s record. The scale of his achievement cannot be understated. When Sampras was narrowly beaten by Agassi in the 1995 US Open final, it looked like his record of 14 Grand Slam titles might never be beaten. Nadal’s great rivals, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, have also failed to match or exceed Federer’s accomplishments.
It is testament to Federer’s dominance that he has been able to win Slam titles at every major tournament. He has won the Australian Open six times, the Wimbledon Championships eight times, and the US Open five times. His first Slam title came at Wimbledon in 2003, and his most recent came at the 2017 Australian Open. In between, he has picked up an astonishing array of trophies and accolades. In 2006, he was named Laureus World Sportsman of the Year, and he has been elected to both the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the ATP Player Council.
Won his seventh Australian Open
Roger Federer defeated Novak Djokovic in the final, 6–4, 3–6, 6–1, 3–6, 6–3 to win the Men’s Singles tennis title at the 2021 Australian Open. This was Federer’s record-extending seventh men’s singles title at Melbourne Park and his twenty-ninth Grand Slam men’s singles title overall, further extending his all-time male record.
Won his third Wimbledon title
Federer won his third Wimbledon title in 2005, defeating Marcos Baghdatis in the final in straight sets. This was Federer’s sixth consecutive Grand Slam final appearance, a record for men’s tennis (equaled by Pete Sampras at Wimbledon 1995–2000). It was also his fourth consecutive Wimbledon title (a record equaled only by Björn Borg from 1976 to 1980), and made him the first man since Sampras in 2000 to win three successive Grand Slam tournaments (a record he would lower to four in 2006–2007). Federer is one of only four men to have won three or more Wimbledons since World War II.
