WWE Survivor Series is an annual professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE. It is the second longest running pay-per-view event in WWE history (behind WWE WrestleMania). The event was created in 1987 by then WWE CEO and Chairman Vince McMahon, with the name “Survivor Series” referring to the fact that the event featured a series of tag team elimination matches. The inaugural Survivor Series, held on Thanksgiving Day 1987, was notable for being the only PPV where all of the matches were eliminations stipulations.
The concept of Survivor Series has been retained each year, with the exception of 2002, where it was replaced by Rebellion. It is traditionally held in November and is considered one of WWE’s “Big Four” pay-per-views, along with WrestleMania, Royal Rumble and SummerSlam. Since its inception, Survivor Series has been exclusive to company’s Raw and SmackDown! brands—as it is one of WWE’s original four PPVs—however from 2005 until 2015 it featured wrestlers from all WWE brands as all titles could be defended on any show.
