WWE Women’s Championships

WWE Women’s Championship

The WWE Women’s Championship is a professional wrestling world championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE on the SmackDown brand. It is one of the two women’s titles in WWE, alongside the WWE Raw Women’s Championship on the Raw brand. The current champion is Bayley, who is in her first reign.

WWE developed a women’s division in response to the popularity of World Championship Wrestling’s (WCW) Cruiserweight division, which featured smaller wrestlers. The first ever woman champion was Alundra Blayze (now known as Madusa), who won it in 1995. The title was vacant for over a year between 1999 and 2000 as a result of Jacqueline Moore winning it on October 17, 1999, and vacating it on November 7, 2000 after she was injured. WWE Divas Championship

The WWE Divas Championship was a women’s professional wrestling championship in WWE. It was established on the Raw brand in 2008, but was subsequently unified with the SmackDown Women’s Championship. The final holder was Charlotte Flair, who is also a former United States Champion, NXT Women’s Champion, and Raw Women’s Champion. The title was retired at WrestleMania 32.

The inaugural champion was Michelle McCool, who won a tournament to crown the inaugural champion on July 28, 2008. McCool held the title for approximately five months before losing it to Maryse on December 21, 2008. Maryse held the title for just under two months before losing it to Melina at the Royal Rumble on January 25, 2009. Melina held the title for just over four months before losing it to Alicia Fox on June 7, 2009.

Alicia Fox became the first African American to win a WWE Divas Championship when she defeated Mickie James at The Bash on June 28, 2009. Fox held the title for less than two weeks before losing it back to James on July 12, 2009. James held the title for just over one month before losing it to Jillian Hall on August 17, 2009. Hall held the title for almost three months before losing it to Naomi Knight (now known as Cameron) on November 15, 2009. Knight held the title for one day before losing it back to Hall on November 16, 2009.
