Early life and family

Melina Perez was born on March 9, 1979, in Los Angeles, California. She has two older sisters. Melina’s parents divorced when she was three years old and she was raised by her mother and stepfather, who she has said were ” very supportive” of her dreams to become a wrestler. Melina graduated from Temecula Valley High School in 1997.

Professional wrestling career

In 2000, Perez began working for New York City-based independent professional wrestling promotion Universal Wrestling Federation (later known as World Xtreme Wrestling), under the ring name Melina Perez. In 2001, she began working for the Pennsylvania-based Independent Wrestling Federation (IWF) as a valet under the name Miss Hancock. She later began wrestling in the IWF women’s division, and held the IWF Women’s Championship for a second time. In 2003, she left the IWF for an opportunity in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW).

Perez made her ECW debut on June 10, 2003, at an ECW live event in Vorhees Township, New Jersey. She was introduced as Chris Benoit’s valet/manager, and accompanied him to the ring. The following week on ECW Television, Benoit cut a promo on then WWE Cruiserweight Champion Matt Hardy; Perez then slapped Hardy across the face while he was distracted by Benoit. At Hardcore Homecoming on June 22, Perez made her PPV debut when she interfered in a match between Hardy and Rhino, which resulted in Hardy losing the match. The following night on ECW TV, Perez defeated Ivory in a singles match after interference from Benoit. At Heat Wave on July 27th Perez again interfered in a match this time between Danny Doring & Roadkill and Tommy Dreamer & Sandman which saw Doring & Roadkill pick up the victory. On August 3rd episode of ECW TV Melina had another match this time teaming with Danny Doring to take on Tommy dreamer & Beulah McGillicutty in a mixed tag team match which saw Doring & Melina again get the victory when Doring pinned Beulah after hitting his “Food Fight” finisher

The following week on SmackDown!, McCool defeated Perez in a Loser Leaves Town match after interference from Vickie Guerrero; this resulted in Perez leaving WWE television for several months.

Perez made her return to WWE television at The Bash pay-per-view in June 2009, attacking Michelle McCool during her match with Vanessa Lachey. The following month at Night of Champions, Melina won her third Women’s Championship by defeating McCool and again at SummerSlam 2009 by defeating both McCool and Eve Torres in a Triple Threat Match thus becoming a record setting two time back to back champion., At Breaking Point 2009 Melina failed to regain the Women’s Championship from Torres in an “I Quit” Match thus ending their feud.[citation needed] On October 25 edition of Raw it was announced that she would take part of Team RAW at Survivor Series along side Mickie James & Gail Kim against Team Smackdown (Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix & Vickey Guerrero). At Survivor Series Melina scored the winning pinfall over Vickie Guerrero giving Team RAW the victory.[citation needed]

On November 16 edition of Raw it was announced that she would face Mickie James for the WWE Women’s Championship along side Layla & Eve Torres against Michelle McCool & Jillian Hall at TLC: Tables Dragps & Chairs.[citation needed] Later that night she saved Gail Kim from an attack by Jillian Hall.[citation needed] At TLC: Tables Dragps & Chairs she failed win become champion again when layouts interfered costing all four ladies their matches.[citation needed] On December 14 edition of Raw it was announced that Melina along side Gail Kim would take on Jillain Hall & Alicia Fox in tag team action.[citation needed]The following week it was announced that if they won their tag team match they would get a shot any one of Vickie Guerrero’s Championships but if they loss Vickie could choose any one member of them (Gail Kim or Alicia Fox) could get fired; however if Vickie lost she would have resigned as General Manager .[citation needed] That same night they went against Vickie Guerrero & Layla but due bad officiating they loss their match resulting Alicia Fox getting fired.[48][failed verification] Later that night Teddy Long came out and said because Vicki used bad officiating he had no choice but make sure that there will be rematch between those four ladies later tonight with himself as special guest referee; which Melina’s team won resulting Vicki resigning as general manager.[49][failed verification]
