MVP, or Montel Vontavious Porter, is a professional wrestler who is currently signed to WWE. He is a former United States Champion and a two-time Tag Team Champion.

Early Life

MVP, real name Hassan Hamin Assad, was born on October 28th, 1973, in Miami, Florida. He was one of six children born to Syrian immigrants. MVP’s father passed away when he was just four years old. As a result, MVP and his siblings were raised by their mother.

MVP’s upbringing

MVP was born in Miami, Florida, to parents of Cuban and African descent. He has four brothers and sisters. His father was a professional wrestler in Cuba during the 1970s. When MVP was nine years-old, his father died from a heart attack.

MVP’s mother worked two jobs to support the family. She eventually remarried and MVP’s stepfather became an important father figure in his life. MVP credits his stepfather with instilling him with the work ethic that has helped him succeed in wrestling.

MVP was a good student and played football and baseball in high school. He was offered a football scholarship to Georgia Tech, but decided instead to pursue a career in professional wrestling.

MVP’s wrestling debut

MVP made his wrestling debut in 2003, when he was just 21 years old. He was signed by WWE and sent to their developmental territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). In OVW, he quickly rose through the ranks and won the OVW Heavyweight Championship. He held the title for nine months before losing it to Robert Roode.

WWE Career

Matthews started his professional wrestling career on the independent circuit in 2000. In November 2001, he signed a development contract with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and was assigned to its developmental territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). In 2002, he won the OVW Heavyweight Championship.

MVP’s first WWE run

MVP’s first WWE run began on the SmackDown brand in mid-2006. He debuted on the June 30, 2006 episode of SmackDown!, appearing in a backstage segment with United States Champion Batista and Rey Mysterio, in which he was revealed as Mysterio’s mystery opponent for that night’s main event, which he won.[48][49] The following week, on the July 7 episode of SmackDown!, MVP defeated Mysterio again to win the United States Championship.[50] At The Great American Bash on July 23, MVP successfully defended the title against Mysterio in a rematch.[51] Over the next few months, MVP feuded with Chris Benoit,[52][53] Jeff Hardy,[54][55] Finlay,[56] and Matt Hardy.[57][58] On October 8 at No Mercy, MVP retained his title against Matt Hardy in a steel cage match.[59]

MVP’s second WWE run

MVP returned to WWE on the November 18, 2017 episode of Raw, coming to the aid of then-WWE United States Champion Roman Reigns, who was being attacked by The Miz and Sheamus. The following week on Raw, Reigns officially welcomed MVP back to WWE. On the December 4 episode of Raw, MVP defeated Seth Rollins in a singles match. At TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs MTV’s Mvp won a Fatal 5-Way Ladder Match to become WWE United States Champion for a record fourth time (tied with Lex Luger), defeating Shelton Benjamin, Zack Ryder, Sin Cara and The Miz. As United States Champion he began teaming with Reigns and appeared at House of Hardcore 32 in a successful title defense against Matt Hardy. At New Year’s Revolution he retained his title against Hardy in a steel cage match after escaping the cage. The following night on the January 8 episode of Raw MVP successfully defended the title against Xavier Woods in what was his final match with WWE.

Post-WWE Career

After leaving WWE in 2014, MVP had a brief stint in TNA from 2015 to 2016. In 2017, he made his return to New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), where he is a one-time IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion. He is also the current NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Champion alongside Beretta and Chuckie T.

MVP’s time in New Japan Pro Wrestling

In November 2016, it was reported that MVP had signed a deal with New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW). He made his debut for the company on January 4, 2017, at Wrestle Kingdom 11 in Tokyo Dome, as a member of Bullet Club, attacking Tetsuya Naito after his match. This led to a feud between the two which resulted in MVP and Bullet Club losing to Naito and his Los Ingobernables de Japon stablemates in an eight-man tag team match at The New Beginning in Sapporo on February 5. On May 3 at Wrestling Dontaku 2017, MVP defeated Juice Robinson to win the IWGP United States Championship. During his title reign, he successfully defended it against Hangman Page on June 11 at Dominion 6.11 in Osaka-jo Hall and Jay White on July 2 at G1 Special in USA. At Power Struggle on November 5, he lost the title back to White.

On January 4, 2018, MVP made his return to NJPW at Wrestle Kingdom 12 in Tokyo Dome as a member of CHAOS, defeating Juice Robinson and Mikey Nicholls in a three-way match. On June 9 at Dominion 6.9 in Osaka-jo Hall, MVP defeated Tetsuya Naito to win the IWGP Intercontinental Championship for the second time. He successfully defended it against Kota Ibushi on July 7 at G1 Special in San Francisco and again against Hiroshi Tanahashi on September 30 at Fight Without Honor. At King of Pro-Wrestling 2018 on October 8, he lost the title back to Tanahashi.

After making several more appearances for NJPW throughout 2019 without winning any championships, MVP wrestled his final match for the company on January 6, 2020, at Wrestle Kingdom 14 in Tokyo Dome before departing from New Japan later that month due to creative differences with NJPW officials

MVP’s return to IMPACT Wrestling

In March 2018, it was announced that MVP had signed with IMPACT Wrestling. He made his return on the March 22, 2018 episode of Impact!, where he saved Eli Drake from an attack by Eddie Edwards. The following week, he defeated Edwards in a singles match. At the Redemption pay-per-view on April 22, MVP defeated Austin Aries to win the IMPACT World Heavyweight Championship.

On the June 7 episode of Impact!, MVP lost the title back to Aries in a steel cage match, after interference from Moose. The two continued to feud over the next few weeks, with MVP defeating Aries in a rematch at Slammiversary XVI on July 22. In August, at Bound for Glory IV, MVP and Moose defeated Aries and Eddie Edwards in a tag team match.

On the October 23 episode of Impact!, it was announced that MVP had quit IMPACT Wrestling due to creative differences.

Personal Life
