Who Gets A Bye In The NFL Playoffs?
Contents
The NFL playoffs are upon us and there are a few teams who have already clinched a spot. But who gets a bye in the playoffs? We break it down for you.
NFL Playoffs
The NFL playoffs are a single-elimination tournament held after the end of the regular season to determine the NFL champion. Wild Card weekend is when the four lowest seeds in each conference play each other. The four winners of those games then advance to the Divisional Round, where they play the top two seeds in their respective conferences. The two winners of those games then advance to the Conference Championships, with the winners of those games advance to the Super Bowl.
How many teams make the playoffs?
In the NFL, 12 teams make the playoffs each year. The four division winners in each conference — the North, South, East, and West — are seeded 1 to 4 based on their regular-season record. The two wild-card teams in each conference — seeded 5 and 6 — are determined by the best remaining records. The NFL playoff bracket is not reseeded as each round progresses.
How are the teams seeded?
The NFL playoffs are not like other professional sports postseason tournaments. Instead of having all the teams that qualify for the playoffs compete in a single-elimination tournament, the NFL has a complex system of semi-final and final games. The teams that win their respective conference championship games advance to the Super Bowl, the biggest game in American professional football.
So, how are the teams seeded in the NFL playoffs? The four divisional winners from each conference (the team with the best record in each division) automatically qualify for the playoffs. These teams are then seeded one through four based on their overall record, with the number one seed going to the team with the best record and so on.
The other two playoff spots in each conference go to what are called ‘wild card’ teams. These are the two teams with the best records that did not win their divisions. These wild card teams are then seeded five and six based on their overall record.
The number one seed in each conference gets a ‘bye’ in the first round of the playoffs while the other six playoff teams play each other. The three winners of these first round games then advance to play the number one seeds in each conference in what are called ‘the divisional playoffs.’ The two winners of these divisional playoff games then advance to play each other in ‘the conference championships,’ with the winner of each conference championship game advancing to ‘the Super Bowl.’

Who gets a bye week?
In the NFL, the team that gets the bye week is the team that did the best in the regular season out of all of the teams in their conference. The two teams with the best record in each conference get a bye week. This means that they do not have to play in the Wild Card round of games. The four divisional winners will be seeded Nos. 1-4 based on their won-loss-tied record, with the tiebreaker procedures as noted in the following paragraphs.
If two or more clubs finish with identical won-loss-tied records, applying the procedures below, they will be seeded in ascending order of finish. Within a division, apply division tiebreakers to determine a club’s seed (within its division). If unable to break a tie within a division, apply wild-card tiebreakers (RECORD vs. COMMON OPPONENTS and STRENGTH OF VICTORY). If still tied, seeds will be assigned in reverse order of regular-season won-loss-tied record. The NFL does not reseed playoff participants during any round other than Wild Card Weekend
AFC Playoffs
The AFC has four division winners and two wild card teams. The division winners are the Patriots, Steelers, Jaguars, and Chiefs. The wild card teams are the Titans and the Ravens. The Titans and Ravens will play each other in the wild card round. The divisional round will have the Patriots playing the Titans and the Steelers playing the Jaguars. The conference championship game will be the Patriots against the Steelers.

In the NFL, 12 teams make the playoffs. The four division winners from both the AFC and NFC get a first-round bye, leaving six wild-card teams to battle it out in the opening weekend. The top seed from each conference then hosts the lowest remaining seed in the divisional round, while the second and third seeds host the other wild-card matchups. The winners from those four games move on to face each other in the conference championships, with the victors advancing to the Super Bowl.

The four division winners in each conference are seeded 1 through 4 based on their overall won-loss-tied record, with the top seed guaranteed to be playing the lowest seed. The NFL does not use a bracket playoff system, so there is no reseeding.
In the first round, dubbed the wild-card playoffs or wild-card weekend, the 4th seed hosts the 5th seed, and the 3rd seed hosts the 6th seed. The 1st seed is idle (has a bye week) and rests until the second round (the divisional playoffs). From this point forward, all games are played on weekends.

Since 2002, the NFC has had 14 teams qualify for the playoffs each year.
