What Color Are NFL Home Jerseys?
In the NFL, home teams typically wear their colored jerseys while away teams wear white. However, there are some teams that have chosen to switch things up in recent years. So, what color are NFL home jerseys?
NFL Home Jerseys
The color of an NFL home jersey must be a color that is Primary, Secondary, or tertiary in nature. NFL home jerseys cannot be white. In the past, NFL home jerseys were usually dark in color, but in recent years, teams have started to experiment with lighter colors.
White
The predominant color of NFL home jerseys is white. All but a handful of teams have white as their base color, with throwbacks and alternate jerseys providing the main variation. NFL home jerseys usually feature the team name across the chest, with the player’s number below it.
Color Rush
The NFL has a “Color Rush” program where teams wear special jerseys for Thursday Night Football games. The jerseys are usually all one color, with contrasting colors for the numbers. Here is a list of Color Rush jerseys for all 32 NFL teams:
Arizona Cardinals – Red
Atlanta Falcons – Black
Baltimore Ravens – Purple

Away Jerseys
In the NFL, home teams get to choose their own jersey colors. This is usually done in an effort to make the team more recognizable to their fans. As a result, home jerseys are usually a team’s primary color, while away jerseys are usually a team’s secondary color.
White
The tradition in the National Football League is that the home team wears white jerseys, while the away team wears colored jerseys. There are exceptions, however; for instance, when the San Francisco 49ers played the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII, both teams wore their black jerseys. In addition, some teams have worn alternative jerseys on special occasions. For example, when the Buffalo Bills played the New York Jets in 2008, both teams wore their “Throwback uniforms”.
Color Rush
Since the 2016 NFL season, Nike has taken over as the official outfitter of NFL jerseys. They’ve made some drastic changes to the traditional design, most notably with the “Color Rush” jerseys. All 32 NFL teams have a “Color Rush” uniform, which is worn during Thursday Night Football games. The idea behind the “Color Rush” is that each team would have a jersey in a color that would pop on TV, making it easier for fans to identify each team.
Some teams have chosen to wear their “Color Rush” jerseys more often than just during Thursday Night Football games. The Buffalo Bills, for example, wore their all-red “Color Rush” jerseys for every home game in 2017. Nike has said that they will never force a team to wear their “Color Rush” jersey, but it seems likely that we’ll see more and more teams wearing them in the future.
Alternate Jerseys
According to NFL rules, each team has the option to wear either their dark colored jerseys at home, or their white jerseys. In most cases, teams choose to wear their dark jerseys at home to give them an advantage over their opponents, since it is more difficult for the opposing team to see.
White
In the NFL, white jerseys are worn at home games. This is because white jerseys contrast more with the brown of the football and are easier for players and referees to see. In addition, white reflects heat better than darker colors, helping players stay cooler in hot weather.
Color Rush
Since 2015, the NFL has had a “Color Rush” promotion in partnership with Nike and USO, in which select Thursday Night Football games would feature teams in special jerseys that are primarily one solid color with contrasting colors on the shoulders. All 32 NFL teams have a “Color Rush” uniform, but they are not worn frequently. In most cases, each team has only worn their “Color Rush” jersey once or twice. Some teams have yet to wear their “Color Rush” jerseys at all.
