Drew Brees was born in Austin, Texas, on January 15, 1979, the son of Mina and Eugene Wilson Brees II. He attended Westlake High School in Austin and played football for the Westlake Chargers, starting as a junior. As a senior he was named the District 25-5A Most Valuable Player (MVP) and honorable mention All-State. In high school he completed 211 of 346 passes (60.7 percent) for 3,528 yards and 41 touchdowns.
In September 1996, Brees enrolled at Purdue University where he played quarterback for the Boilermakers from 1997 to 2000. As a freshman in 1997 he started nine of eleven games and completed 196 of 325 passes (60.3 percent) for 2,285 yards with 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. In 1998 he started all twelve games and set single-season school records with 291 completions on 454 attempts (64.3 percent) for 3,983 yards with 34 touchdowns and just 8 interceptions; his 34 touchdown passes broke the previous school record of 32 set by Mike Phipps in 1969 and his 3,983 passing yards shattered the old school mark of 3,890 set byEric Hunter in 1983.
