MLB

The MLB (Major League Baseball) is the professional baseball league in North America, and is widely considered the highest level of professional baseball in the world. The league is made up of 30 teams: 29 in the United States and 1 in Canada.

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are an American professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois. The Cubs compete in Major League Baseball as a member club of the National League Central division, where they are the defending World Series champions. The team plays its home games at Wrigley Field, located on the city’s North Side.

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. The Red Sox have won nine World Series championships, tied for the third-most of any MLB team, and they have played in 13. Their most recent appearance and win was in 2018. In addition, they won the 1904 American League pennant, but were not able to defend their 1903 World Series championship when the New York Giants refused to participate in the 1904 World Series rather than face the reigning champions.

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the Bronx, New York City. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. They are one of two major league clubs based in New York City, the other being the National League’s (NL) New York Mets. The Yankees began play in the 1901 season as the Baltimore Orioles (no relation to the modern Baltimore Orioles team), playing games at Hilltop Park. In 1913, they moved to Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, and played there one year. Yankee Stadium opened in 1923 and has served as their home ballpark ever since.

Houston Astros

The Houston Astros are a professional baseball team based in Houston, Texas. The Astros compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division. The team was established as the Houston Colt .45s and began play in 1962 in the National League (NL). The Astros played in Houston from 1962 to 1964 and then were known as the Houston Astros from 1965 to 1971. From 1972 to 2013, they played their home games at the Astrodome, which was also home to NL’s Oilers and the short-lived expansion franchise Toronto Huskies of the NBA.

Minor Leagues

Triple-A

Triple-A or Class AAA is the highest level of play in Minor League Baseball in the United States and Mexico. Before 2008, Triple-A leagues also fielded teams in Canada. A total of 30 teams play in the Triple-A International League (IL) and Pacific Coast League (PCL), with 14 teams in the IL and 16 in the PCL. The MLB-independent Mexican League fields 18 teams.

Triple-A teams are typically located in large metropolitan areas that do not have a Major League Baseball team, such as San Antonio; Austin; Columbus, Ohio; Louisville, Kentucky; Indianapolis; Toledo, Ohio; Durham, North Carolina; and Sacramento, California. Occasionally a Triple-A team may be located in a city that has an MLB team if there is no suitable arena for a lower minor league team of that sport within the vicinity, such as Reno, Nevada (which is 75 miles (121 km) northeast of Oakland) with its Nevada Wolves basketball team.

Double-A

In baseball, the Double-A level is generally considered the cutoff point between prospects and role players. A small number of players make the jump from Double-A directly to the majors each year, but most spending time at this level are honing their skills with an eye on reaching the big leagues in the near future.

There are 30 teams in Double-A baseball, evenly divided between the Eastern League and Southern League. Each team plays 140 games during the regular season, which runs from early April through early September. At the end of the regular season, six teams from each league advance to their respective playoffs.

During the playoffs, the top two seeds from each league receive a bye through to the best-of-five semifinal round. The remaining four teams play a best-of-three series with the winners advancing to face the top seeds. The winners of those semifinal series then meet in a best-of-five championship series to determine a league champion.

The overall winner of Double-A baseball is determined by a one-game playoff between the champions of the Eastern League and Southern League. This game is known as the Dixie Series and is held annually at Verizon Arena in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Single-A

There are three full-season Single-A leagues: the Florida State League, the Mid-Atlantic League, and the South Atlantic League.

The Florida State League is a 12-team league that plays a 140 game schedule. The league is split into two divisions, the North and the South.

The Mid-Atlantic League is also a 12-team league that plays 140 games. The league is split into two divisions, the Northern and the Southern.

The South Atlantic League is the largest of the Single-A leagues with 14 teams. The league is split into two divisions, the Eastern and the Western.

College

The top-ranked Baseball teams in the NCAA will be playing today. Here is the list of the games that will be happening today.

NCAA Division I

College baseball is played at the NCAA Division I, II, and III levels. Division I baseball is the highest level of collegiate play, with the best teams in the country competing against each other. Division II and III baseball programs are also very competitive, but they are not as highly regarded as Division I programs.

The NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament is a double-elimination tournament that determines the national champion of college baseball. The tournament is held each year in late May and early June. 64 teams compete in the tournament, with four teams from each of 16 different regional sites advancing to the super regional round.

The College World Series (CWS) is the final round of the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament. The CWS is a best-of-three series that is played between the winners of each of the two national semi-final games. The CWS is held each year in early June at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska.

NCAA Division II

The NCAA Division II tournament is underway, with games taking place across the country. Here is a look at some of the key matchups:

In the South Region, top-seeded Florida Southern will take on fourth-seeded Tampa in the semifinals. The other semifinal will pit second-seeded Arkansas Tech against third-seeded Delta State.

In the Midwest Region, top-seeded Central Missouri will take on fourth-seeded Wayne State in the semifinals. The other semifinal will see second-seeded Ashland take on third-seeded Grand Valley State.

In the West Region, top-seeded UC San Diego will faceoff against fourth-seeded Stanislaus State in the semifinals. The other semifinal will feature second-seeded Cal Poly Pomona against third-seeded Point Loma.

Finally, in the East Region, top-seeded Mercyhurst will battle it out with fourth-seeded Franklin Pierce in the semifinals. The other semifinal will see second-seeded West Chester take on third-seeded Southern New Hampshire.

NCAA Division III

NCAA Division III (D-III) is a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States. D-III consists of athletic programs at colleges and universities that are neither mandated nor sponsored by the NCAA.

D-III schools are not allowed to award athletic scholarships to their athletes. However, they may provide other forms of financial aid such as need-based grants and merit-based scholarships.

D-III athletics programs are typically smaller than those at D-I or D-II institutions. There are approximately 170,000 student-athletes that compete in 23 different sports at D-III schools.
