What Is Inside A Baseball?
A baseball is made up of several different parts. The core of the baseball is the cork, which is surrounded by yarn and then covered by leather. The stitching on the baseball is also made of yarn.
The Cork
The center of a baseball is a small, hard, round piece of cork that is wrapped tightly in yarn. The yarn is then covered with a layer of rubber. The cork is what gives the baseball its bounce.
The Rubber
At the very core of the baseball is a small, hard rubber ball. This rubber ball is surrounded by yarn and then covered with leather. The yarn is wound tightly around the rubber to keep it in place and then covered with a thin layer of leather. The leather is stitched together to form a seam that runs around the circumference of the ball. All of this stitching makes the ball aerodynamic and gives it spin when thrown.
The Leather
The baseball is covered in leather. The leather is treated with a substance that makes the ball easy to grip. The leather is also embossed with the trademark of the company that made the ball.
The Winding
The winding is a continuous, spiral-shaped string of yarn that helps support the shape of the baseball. It also gives the ball its red color.
The stitching
Wound yarns are used to create the baseball’s cover. A left-handed pitcher needs a different type of ball, as do some hitters. The stitching is low and tight on a new baseball, but as the game progresses, the surface of the ball begins to fray. This provides more grip for pitchers and can make a difference in how well a hitter makes contact.
