The NHL season is in full swing and there are a lot of great teams vying for the top spot. Who is the best NHL team in 2021?
NHL Teams
Tampa Bay Lightning
The Tampa Bay Lightning are an American professional ice hockey team based in Tampa, Florida. They compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Central Division of the Eastern Conference. The Lightning play their home games at Amalie Arena. The Lightning have one Stanley Cup championship in their history, in 2003–04.
The franchise was founded as an expansion team in 1992 by Phil Esposito and his brother Tony, former players for the Chicago Blackhawks and members of the Hockey Hall of Fame. The team’s name was inspired by that of the Tampa Bay Bandits, an American Football League franchise which existed from 1975 to 1987.
On October 7, 2008, the Lightning ousted the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings from the playoffs in game seven of the conference semifinals. This was only the second time since 1966 that a defending champion had been eliminated during the first two rounds of playoffs, with Philadelphia being swept by Montreal in 1987 being the other instance. In 2009, they became only the third team to reach conference finals consecutively as an eighth seed or lower since 1966 (joining St. Louis in 1968 and Nashville in 2004). Making it to back-to-back conference finals has not been done since Colorado accomplished this feat between 1996 and 2001 (and they would ultimately win two Stanley Cups over those five years).
Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche are one of the best NHL teams in 2021. They have a strong roster and are coached by one of the best coaches in the NHL. They are expected to make a deep run in the playoffs and could potentially win the Stanley Cup.

They began play in the 2017–18 NHL season as an expansion team, and are currently members of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. The team is owned by Black Knight Sports & Entertainment, a consortium led by Bill Foley and the Maloof family.
Since their inaugural season, the Golden Knights have made the playoffs in three of four seasons, reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in their first appearance and winning the Western Conference Championship in their second appearance.
