NHL History

Professional hockey is believed to have originated in 1875 in Montreal, Canada, with the first recorded indoor game taking place at the Victoria Skating Rink. The Canadian Amateur Hockey League (CAHL) was founded in 1893 with seven teams. The National Hockey League (NHL) was formed in 1917 with five Canadian teams and three American teams.

How did the NHL come to be?

In 1917, the National Hockey League (NHL) was founded in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The league originally consisted of five teams: the Montreal Canadiens, the Montreal Wanderers, the Ottawa Senators, the Quebec Bulldogs, and the Toronto Arenas. The NHL is the oldest professional hockey league in the world.

The first NHL season began on December 19, 1917. By 1926, the league had grown to ten teams with the addition of the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Cougars (later renamed the Detroit Red Wings), New York Americans (later renamed the New York Rangers), and Pittsburgh Pirates (later renamed the Pittsburgh Penguins).

Since its inception, the NHL has undergone several expansions and mergers. In 1942, the Brooklyn Americans withdrew from the league due to financial difficulties, reducing the number of teams back down to seven. The league remained at seven teams until 1967 when six new teams were added in what is now referred to as the “Original Six” era: The California Seals (later relocated to Cleveland and then becoming today’s San Jose Sharks), Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota North Stars (later relocated and becoming today’s Dallas Stars), Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and St. Louis Blues.

In 1974-75, another wave of expansion saw NHL hockey return to Vancouver and Buffalo for the first time since before World War II as well as add franchises in Atlanta (now Calgary), Edmonton and Tampa Bay. From 1979-80 to 1991-92 only five more cities were added as NHL markets with franchises in Hartford (Connecticut Whalers became Carolina Hurricanes), New Jersey Devils, San Jose Sharks, Ottawa Senators and Tampa Bay Lightning debuting during that time frame.. however several other franchises shifted locations during those years including: Colorado Rockies becoming New Jersey Devils; Winnipeg Jets becoming Phoenix Coyotes/Arizona Coyotes; Quebec Nordiques becoming Colorado Avalanche; and Hartford Whalers becoming Carolina Hurricanes).

The most recent expansion took place in 2017 when Las Vegas was awarded an NHL franchise which became known as The Vegas Golden Knights who made a historic run all they way to Stanley Cup Finals in their inaugural season falling just short against Washington Capitals.
