Which NFL Teams Haven’t Won the Super Bowl?
Contents
It’s hard to believe that there are still four NFL teams who have never won a Super Bowl, but it’s true! Here’s a look at the four teams who are still waiting for their first Lombardi Trophy.
The teams that have never won the Super Bowl
There are 9 NFL teams that have never won the Super Bowl. These are the Buffalo Bills, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions, the Houston Texans, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Minnesota Vikings, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers. All of these teams have never even made it to the big game.
The Arizona Cardinals
The Cardinals have been in the league since 1920 and are one of the oldest teams in the NFL. They’ve never won a Super Bowl, but they did win the NFL Championship in 1947.
The Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns are a professional American football team based in Akron, Barberton, and Canton, Ohio. The Browns compete in the National Football League as a member club of the American Football Conference North division. They play their home games at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland. Since 1999, the Browns have been the team most associated with losing in the NFL. They have had just two winning seasons (in 2002 and 2007), and no playoff appearances since their return to the NFL in 1999 (in 2002 as an expansion team). They are one of four current teams and the only AFC team to have never played in a Super Bowl (joining the Detroit Lions of the NFC, as well as fellow AFC teams Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars).
The Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL), and play their home games at Ford Field in Downtown Detroit. Originally based in Portsmouth, Ohio and called the Portsmouth Spartans, the team began play in 1929 as an independent professional football team and joined the NFL in 1930. Despite success within the NFL, they could not survive in Portsmouth, then the smallest city in NFL history to have a franchise. The team was bought and relocated to Detroit for the 1934 season.
The Houston Texans
The Houston Texans are a professional American football team based in Houston, Texas. The Texans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. The team plays its home games at NRG Stadium.
The franchise was founded in 2002 as the expansion Houston Texans by then-owner Bob McNair and executive/general manager Charley Casserly. The Texans replaced the Houston Oilers, who moved to Nashville, Tennessee and became the Tennessee Titans. The team’s majority owner is Cal McNair, Bob McNair’s son. The Texans began play in 2002 with former Stanford University head coach Dom Capers as the franchise’s first head coach. The team’s first game was played on October 13th against the Dallas Cowboys and they lost 19-10. After finishing 4-12 in their inaugural season, Hurricane Katrina forced them to play all of their home games at Reliant Stadium (now NRG Stadium) in 2005 which contributed to a 2-14 record that year. Despite posting back to back losses seasons in 2007 and 2008, they managed to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history after an 8-8 season led by new head coach Gary Kubiak in 2009 thanks to a Week 17 victory over the New England Patriots coupled with other results going their way that day. They were subsequently eliminated by none other than the wild card Patriots again in what has been colloquially referred to as “the Miracle at Reliant” because of how improbable it was for them to come back from being down 21 points heading into the 4th quarter only for Tom Brady to throw 3 interceptions while Matt Schaub threw 2 touchdown passes including one with under 2 minutes left that Andre Johnson caught which led Kris Brown kicked a field goal as time expired for the final score of 34-32 after which Schaub won AFC Offensive Player of the Week as a result while Johnson won AFC Offensive Player of the Month making them only 1 of 10 times where teammates have won those awards in the same month and just 1 of 3 times it has happened in December or later. It wouldn’t be until 2012 that they made it back to the playoffs led by Defensive Player of Year J.J Watt who had 20.5 sacks that year, 84 tackles, 16 passes defended, and 4 forced fumbles along with running back Arian Foster who rushed for over 1,800 yards and scored 12 touchdowns as they finished 12-4 but lost again in heartbreaking fashion this time at home against eventual Super Bowl XLVI champions Baltimore Ravens thanks to Jacoby Jones’ game tying touchdown catch with under 30 seconds left followed by Justin Tucker’s game winning field goal as time expired despite outgaining Baltimore almost 2 to 1 as a result (457 yards to Baltimore’s Redditor do your worst 252 yards) leading many including Schaub himself saying post game that “It’s hard when it happens twice” referring to how they had previously blown another 21 point lead earlier that year against divisional rivals Minnesota Vikings only for Adrian Peterson to score 2 late touchdowns including one with less than 30 seconds left followed by Blair Walsh kicking a game winning field goal as time expired for another devastating loss (although unlike against Baltimore where they held Adrian Peterson under 100 yards rushing despite him coming into that game averaging almost 200 yards per game up until then), Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki ordering measures preventingFanDuel from continuing accepting money in part because there are no casinos or gambling of any kind allowed anywhere throughout Iraq following Saddam Hussein outlawing them following his Ba’athist party taking power in 1968 citing them as The teams that have won the Super Bowl
The NFL is one of the most popular sports leagues in the world and the Super Bowl is the biggest event in the sport. Every year, teams battle it out in the hope of making it to the big game and winning the coveted Lombardi Trophy. However, there are a few teams that have never won the Super Bowl.
The Green Bay Packers
The green Bay Packers have won the Super Bowl four times, most recently in 2010. The Packers are the only team to have won three consecutive NFL championships, winning in 1966, 1967 and 1968. They are also the only team to have won two Super Bowls in a row, winning in 1997 and 1998.
The New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are a professional American football team based in the Greater Boston area. The Patriots compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) East division. The team plays its home games at Gillette Stadium in the town of Foxborough, Massachusetts, which is located 28 miles (45 km) southwest of downtown Boston.
The Patriots have appeared in ten Super Bowls in franchise history, winning seven of them. They defeated the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII for their sixth Super Bowl championship, tying the Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Francisco 49ers for second most Super Bowl victories with six apiece. The Patriots are also tied with the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos for most appearances in a Super Bowl with eight apiece.
Belichick has led the Patriots to an NFL-record 16 division titles and 11 conference championships, including eight consecutive AFC East titles from 2009 to 2016. Since 2001, Belichick has coached 23 players to 31 Pro Bowl selections,22 first-team All-Pro selections, and 52 players who have been on the 53-man roster at some point during their careers.
The New York Giants
The New York Giants are a professional American football team based in the New York metropolitan area. The Giants compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) East division. The team plays its home games at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which it shares with the New York Jets in a unique arrangement. The Giants hold their summer training camp at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center at the Meadowlands Sports Complex.
The Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers have won the Super Bowl six times, which is the most of any team in the NFL. They have been to the big game eight times, which is also the most of any team. They have a long history of success, dating back to their first season in 1933.
The teams that have never been to the Super Bowl
There are a handful of NFL teams that have never won the Super Bowl. The Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars have all never made it to the big game. These teams have all had their share of heartbreak.
The Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers are a professional American football team based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Panthers compete in the National Football League (NFL), as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) South division. The team is headquartered in Bank of America Stadium in uptown Charlotte; projects to be completed by the stadium include an expansion that would add thousands of square feet and another that would renovate the property’s suites. Matt Rhule is the team’s current head coach, and former NFL player Marty Hurney is its general manager.
The Cincinnati Bengals
The Cincinnati Bengals are a professional American football franchise based in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Bengals compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) North division. Their home stadium is Paul Brown Stadium in downtown Cincinnati.
The Bengals were founded in 1966 as a member of the American Football League (AFL) by former Cleveland Browns head coach Paul Brown. Brown was the Bengals’ head coach from their inception to 1975. After being dismissed as the Browns’ head coach by Art Modell in January 1963, Brown had shown interest in establishing another NFL franchise in Ohio and looked at both Cincinnati and Columbus. He ultimately chose to be based in Cincinnati.
At the time, there were few if any major professional sports teams in Ohio, and Cleveland was considered the leading city in the state with Cincinnati third behind Columbus. The Bengals original owner was noted real estate developer James C. Garner, who owned several local real estate firms andasonry firms, some of which he merged to form Garner Construction Company; he later sold his share of the team to fellow Bengal and businessman Carl Hirsch because he wanted to focus on his construction business.
The Los Angeles Chargers
Though they were founded in 1959, the Los Angeles Chargers have never won a Super Bowl. They did, however, make it to the AFL Championship game in 1960 and 1963, though they lost both times. In 1994, the Chargers made it to the AFC Championship game but lost to the San Francisco 49ers 49-26.
The Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings are a professional American football team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Vikings joined the National Football League (NFL) as an expansion team in 1960, and first took the field for the 1961 season. The team competes in the National Football Conference (NFC) North division.
