Introduction
It’s time for another thrilling instalment of Uga vs Lsu baseball! These two teams have a long and storied history, dating all the way back to 1892. Who will come out on top in this latest matchup?
Uga’s Road to the Super Regional
The University of Georgia Bulldogs have had an amazing season so far. They started off strong in the SEC tournament defeating Arkansas and LSU. This led them to the Championship game where they lost to Ole Miss Despite this loss, they were still able to secure a spot in the NCAA tournament They then won their first two games against Mercer and Troy. This set up a rematch against LSU in the Super Regional The Bulldogs are looking to take revenge and punch their ticket to Omaha.
So, who will win? It is hard to say. Uga has the home field advantage, but LSU has been on a tear lately. Both teams are evenly matched and it should be a great series.
Lsu’s Road to the Super Regional
It’s been two weeks since the Eastern Conference tournament ended, and the University of Georgia baseball team is still waiting to find out who its opponent will be in the NCAA Super Regional
The Bulldogs (43-17) are the No. 2 seed in the Atlanta regional and will take on No. 3 seed Florida Atlantic (42-17) in their first game Friday at 1 p.m. at SunTrust Park.
If Georgia wins that game, it will play either No. 1 seed Jacksonville State (44-16) or No. 4 seed Samford (34-24) on Saturday at 1 p.m., with a trip to the College World Series on the line.
The Bulldogs are trying to reach the CWS for the fourth time in school history and first time since 2011. They have never won a National Championship but they did make it to the CWS finals in 2008, where they lost to Fresno State
This will be Georgia’s fifth appearance in an NCAA Super Regional and it is 2-2 in those games. The Bulldogs lost to Florida State in 2010 and 2013 and beat Clemson in 2006 and 2007.
Pitching Matchups
In the pitching department, UGA will have the advantage with their ace, Cole Wilcox, on the mound. Wilcox has a 3.14 ERA and has struck out 126 batters in 103 innings pitched this season. LSU will counter with Zach Hess, who has a 4.84 ERA and has struck out 85 batters in 78 innings pitched.
Infield Matchups
In order to win any baseball game a team must first take care of the little things. The team that can execute the fundamentals better than their opponents usually comes out on top. One of the most important aspects of baseball is defense, specifically the infield. Infielders have to be able to not only field their position well but also have a good arm to make the throws across the diamond. Let’s take a look at how these two teams stack up against each other in the infield.
At shortstop for LSU is sophomore Zack Finegan. Finegan was ranked as a four-star recruit coming out of High School and was ranked as the sixth best shortstop in his class. He has good range and a strong arm that should be able to keep runners from taking extra bases. For Georgia, they will be trotting out junior Cam Shepherd. Shepherd was also a four-star recruit coming out of high school and was ranked as the seventh best shortstop in his class. He, like Finegan, has good range and a strong arm. This is a matchup of two very even players at a very important position
LSU will have junior Josh Smith manning third base. Smith was…
Outfield Matchups
With the big game just around the corner, all eyes are on the players to see how they will perform. But what about the outfield matchups? Who has the advantage?
In left field both teams have strong hitters. For LSU, it’s sophomore sensation JoAdrián Acta. He’s batting .339 with 10 home runs and 39 RBI. For UGA, freshman Tyler Frank has been a revelation, batting .325 with 7 home runs and 32 RBI. Frank has a bit more power, but Acta is the better hitter overall. Advantage: LSU
In center field, LSU has another sophomore star in Jacoby Ross. He’s hitting .343 with 5 home runs and 37 RBI. UGA will counter with junior Logan Young, who is batting .298 with 9 Home Runs and 36 RBI. Young is a better all-around player, but Ross has more speed and is a better fielder. Advantage: LSU
In right field, UGA has junior Tucker Bradley, who is hitting .276 with 14 home runs and 41 RBI. Bradley has more power than LSU’s Jaden Hill but Hill is a better hitter overall (.289) and is faster on the bases. Advantage: LSU
Catcher Matchups
To win the game, both teams will have to rely on their strengths – the offense for LSU and the pitching for UGA. However, let’s take a closer look at the catcher matchups.
LSU will be sending out Zachary Watson, who is batting .333 this season. He’ll be up against UGA’s Luke Wagner, who is batting .240. With Watson’s higher batting average he should give LSU an advantage in this game.
Similarly, UGA will be relying on their pitcher, Cole Wilcox, who has an ERA of 2.70. Wilcox will be matched up against LSU’s Daniel Cabrera, whose ERA is 4.50. Once again, UGA has the advantage here with a lower ERA.
So far, it looks like UGA has the edge in this game. However, anything can happen on game day so we’ll have to wait and see who comes out on top!
designated hitter Matchups
As the starting DH for UGA, Freddie Freeman will be up against LSU’s Matt Ott for the first time this season. In their careers, Ott has only given up 2 home runs to Freeman, but both of those came last season. Freeman is batting .440 this season, while Ott is holding opponents to a .176 batting average The matchup favors Uga in this game.
Bench Matchups
The Uga vs Lsu baseball game is scheduled for Saturday, March 3 at 2:00pm CST. The teams will face off in Death Valley, and the game will be televised on ESPN2. Here is a look at the bench matchups for both teams.
Uga:
The Uga bench is full of versatile players who can contribute in a variety of ways. Andrew Wilkins and Curt Powell can both play multiple positions and they provide a nice power boost off the bench. Michael Burns is another versatile player who can come in and play either second base or center field, and he also brings some speed to the table. Lastly, Connor Jones provides a left-handed bat that can come in and pinch hit or spell a struggling starter. Overall, the Uga bench is deep and experienced, and they should be able to provide a big boost to the team on Saturday.
Lsu:
The Lsu bench is headlined by outfielder Antoine Duplantis, who is one of the best hitters on the team. He provides a big power boost off the bench, and he can also play all three field positions Jake Slaughter is another player who brings some pop to the bench, and he can also play first base or third base in a pinch. Lastly, Zach Watson provides a spark with his speed and defense, and he can also play all three outfield positions. Overall, the Lsu bench has some good depth and experience, but they will need to step up against a deep Uga lineup.
