The history of Overton baseball

baseball has been a part of Overton for many years. In the early days, the game was played on a field located behind the town hall. The first recorded game took place in 1887, when the Overton 9 defeated the St. Louis team 3-2.

In 1916, a new ball field was built on what is now Main Street, and Overton baseball became known as “The Friendly Game.” The people of Overton were very supportive of their team and came out to watch the games whenever they could. One local newspaper reported that “baseball is Overton’s leading industry.”

The team continued to play at Main Street until 1937, when a new ball field was built on Broadway. This field was home to the Overton baseball team for many years and was also used by other local teams.

In 2001, a group of citizens formed a committee to raise funds for a new ball field. The committee worked hard to secure donations and grants, and in 2003, construction began on a new ball park adjacent to the old one on Broadway. The new park was named after Joe Overton, who had been a Major League Baseball player from 1926-1938.

Overton baseball is still going strong today. The teams now play in the Joe Overton Park, and the community continues to support them. If you’re ever in town, be sure to catch a game!
