The game was a close one throughout, with neither team able to gain a significant advantage. The Oilers took the lead in the first period, but the Flames quickly tied it up. The Oilers then scored again in the second period, only to have the Flames tie it up once more.
It was in the third period that Nugent-Hopkins finally scored the game-winning goal, much to the delight of Oilers fans. The play was reviewed by officials, but it was determined that the goal was good and Edmonton had won the game.
