Get to know the 2021 University of Michigan Hockey Roster

The University of Michigan Hockey Team is made up of some of the best young athletes in the country. These student-athletes come from all over North America and Europe to compete at the highest level of collegiate hockey.

Introduction

The 2021 Michigan Wolverines men’s ice hockey season is the 115th season of play for the program and the 48th in the Big Ten Conference. The Wolverines are currently coached by Mel Pearson, in his 7th season.

This article provides an introduction to the 2021 Michigan Wolverines men’s Ice Hockey team roster.

Goaltenders

Adrian College junior goaltender Maddi Hill is one of two netminders on the Michigan hockey roster this season.

Hill, who is from Brighton, Mich., transferred to Michigan from Adrian College after two seasons. As a freshman at Adrian, she played in three games and had a 2-1-0 record with a 2.33 goals against average and .929 save percentage She appeared in two games as a sophomore and had a 1-1-0 record with a 2.01 GAA and .938 save percentage.

Michigan’s other goaltender is sophomore Carrie Boutillier. Boutillier, who is from Montreal, Quebec, played in eight games as a freshman last season and had a 3-3-2 record with a 2.48 GAA and .909 save percentage.

Defensemen

Michigan returns five of their six defensemen from last season, including juniors Owen Power and Luke Martin who were each top-10 NHL Draft picks in 2020. The group is anchored by senior Joseph Gonell, who has been a stalwart on the blue line since his freshman year.

The Wolverines will also be looking to sophomore Matthew Beniers to provide a boost on defense. Beniers was named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Year and was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection last season.

Forwards

The 2021 UMICH Hockey Team has 12 forwards, 9 of which are returning from last year. The new forwards for this season are Aidan McKinney, Owen Power, and Thomas Bordeleau.

The top scorer from last year, Cooper Marody, is returning for his senior year. He will be joined by fellow seniors Luke Morgan and Will Lockwood. The forward group also includes junior Jack LaFontaine and sophomores Dylan Larkin, Max Jones, and Tony Calderone.

Rounding out the group are freshmen Aidan McKinney, Owen Power, and Thomas Bordeleau.

Coaching Staff

The Umich Hockey team is coached by Mel Pearson, who is in his seventh season as Head Coach of the Wolverines. Coach Pearson led the Michigan Hockey program to a National Championship in 2018 and has an overall record of 193-105-24 with the Wolverines.

Assistant coaches are Billy Powers (5th season), Steve Shields (3rd season) and Chris Hopkins (1st season).
