A NBA or an NBA?
The debate rages on – is it “A NBA” or “an NBA?” We take a look at the grammatical debate and which is correct.
What is the difference between an NBA and an NBA?
The NBA, or National Basketball Association, is the professional basketball league in the United States. The NBA is composed of 30 teams, 29 of which are located in the United States and 1 in Canada. The NBA is a member of USA Basketball, which is the national governing body for basketball in the United States.
The NBA has two divisions: the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. Each conference has three divisions, and each division has five teams. The NBA playoffs are a best-of-seven series between the eight teams from each conference that have the best record in their respective divisions.
The winner of the NBA Finals receives the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, which is named after former NBA commissioner Larry O’Brien.
Which one is better?
The debate over whether the NBA is better than the NHL will probably never be settled definitively. However, there are some key points that can be used to argue that the NBA is superior to the NHL.
First, the NBA is a global league with players from all over the world, while the NHL is still primarily composed of Canadian and American players. This gives the NBA a big advantage in terms of marketing and international appeal.
Second, NBA players are generally considered to be more skilled than NHL players. This is reflected in the fact that many of the best hockey players in the world (e.g. Crosby, Ovechkin) have come from countries where basketball is also popular (e.g. Canada, Russia).
Third, the NBA has a longer season and more playoff teams than the NHL, which makes it more exciting and competitive.
Fourth, NBA games are generally faster-paced and higher-scoring than NHL games, which make them more entertaining to watch.
Finally, the NBA has proven to be more stable and successful than the NHL in recent years, with fewer teams relocating or going bankrupt.
All things considered, it seems clear that the NBA is currently superior to the NHL in terms of popularity, skill level, competitiveness, entertainment value, and stability.
Why?
The possessive form of a noun is usually formed by adding an apostrophe and an -s to the end of the word, as in “the cat’s toy” or “the team’s bus.” However, there are many exceptions to this rule. One common exception is when the noun is plural but doesn’t end in -s, as in “the children’s parents” or “the people’s republic.” In these cases, you add just the apostrophe.
Another common exception occurs with singular proper nouns that end in -s, as in “Kansas’ capital” or “Texas’ governor.” In these cases, you can either add just the apostrophe or add an apostrophe and an -s. For example, both ” Achilles’ heel” and “Achilles’s heel” are correct.
The same happens with words like “it” and “you,” which are singular but don’t end in -s. For example, both ” it’s hot outside” and “its hot outside” are correct.
