He played college basketball for one season with the UCLA Bruins, earning consensus first-team All-American honors before the Los Angeles Lakers selected him with the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft. Born and raised in Chino Hills, California, Ball began his basketball career playing for his father’s Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team, Big Ballers VXT. He gained national attention as a high school player when ESPN broadcast his games. As a freshman at UCLA in 2016–17, he was named one of the ten players to watch by the website Bleacher Report. He led the nation in assists and broke UCLA and Pac-12 Conference records for assists in a season. Ball declared for the NBA draft after one season at UCLA and was selected by the Lakers with the second overall pick.

LiAngelo Ball (born November 24, 1998) is an American professional basketball player for the Oklahoma City Blue of the NBA G League. He played college basketball for one season with the UCLA Bruins. He was a member of the Bruin’s men’s basketball team that won the 2019 Pac-12 Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Ball was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He attended Chino Hills High School, where he helped lead his team to a 35–0 record and a national championship during his senior season in 2016–17. Ball played AAU basketball for Big Ballers VXT.

Regarded as a four-star recruit by 247Sports.com, Ball committed to playing college basketball for UCLA over offers from several other programs, including Louisville, Kansas, Notre Dame, USC and Texas.

As a freshman at UCLA in 2017–18, Ball averaged 10.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in 36 games (one start). On December 21, 2017 against Kent State, he scored 33 points on 12-of-15 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and two assists; it was the most points scored by any player making his collegiate debut that season. He scored 19 points in a come-from-behind victory over Washington on February 10, 2018. Two days later against USC, he suffered an ankle injury that sidelined him for five games. After UCLA defeated Arizona State in the semifinals of the tournament on March 9 to advance to the championship game against Oregon, LiAngelo and two teammates – Cody Riley and Jalen Hill – were arrested on suspicion of shoplifting from three high-end stores in Hangzhou while the team was in China for their season opener against Georgia Tech earlier that week; all three players were suspended indefinitely from the team as a result. The suspension caused him to miss several games early in his sophomore season before he was reinstated by head coach Steve Alford on December 13 after serving an undisclosed internal suspension within the program; he did not travel with or dress for any games during his suspension but continued to practice with the team.
