When do the finals start?
The NBA Finals are the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA), a men’s professional basketball league in North America. The annual tradition began in 1947, when the Basketball Association of America (BAA) held a best-of-seven playoff to decide its first ever champion. The first two were won by the Western Conference champions, the Minneapolis Lakers. The Eastern Conference then won consecutive titles, with the Philadelphia Warriors winning in 1947 and the Syracuse Nationals winning in 1948. In 1949, the BAA merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) to form the NBA, and held a single championship series between its Eastern and Western Conference champions. From 1950 to 1982–83, home court advantage in the NBA Finals alternated between conferences each year, regardless of regular season records. In 1983–84 and 1984–85, home court advantage was determined by whether or not a team had occupied the floor during an odd-numbered or even-numbered year; this system guaranteed that each team would host at least one home game during every two-year cycle.
The NBA Finals has been played at neutral sites – that is, neither team has home court advantage – nine times: three times (1982–83, 1984–85 and 1985–86) when there were no odd-numbered or even-numbered years; four times (1989, 1999, 2007 and 2020) due to arena conflicts or renovations; and twice (1998 and 2020) due to COVID-19 pandemic. During all nine of these occasions, teams from both conferences have played each other. This happened in 2020 due to both conferences having fifteen teams each – thus allowing for an “interconference” Finals – and it will happen again in 2021 for the same reason.
The most recent NBA Finals occurred in 2020 between the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat. The Lakers won the series 4–2 to earn their record-tying 17th NBA championship overall, as well as their record-tying fourth title since joining the league in 1948 while playing in Minneapolis (the previous three having been won while based there).
