Are There Any Asians In The NFL?
Contents
No matter what your race, creed, or color, if you want to play in the NFL you have to be one heck of an athlete. But are there any Asians in the NFL?
The History of Asians in the NFL
Though there have been a handful of Asians in the NFL, the league has never had an Asian superstar. However, that could be changing soon with the recent success of quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Dak Prescott. The question is, are there any Asians in the NFL? And if so, what is their story?
The first Asian player in the NFL
The first Asian player in the NFL was actually Hawaiian, Hawiian-born Wesley Fraser “Frog” Wikinson. He played for the San Francisco 49ers in 1927. In 1932, Japanese-American Johnny Nomura played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. However, it wasn’t until 1948 that an Asian player became a regular starter in the NFL. That player was Chinese-American Marion Motley, who played for the Cleveland Browns.
The number of Asian players in the NFL today
There are currently no Asians playing in the NFL, but there have been a handful of players of Asian descent who have made it to the league in recent years.
The most notable Asian player in NFL history is probably defensive end Dat Nguyen, who played for the Dallas Cowboys from 1999-2006. Nguyen was born in Vietnam and came to the United States as a child. He went on to star at Texas A&M University before being drafted by the Cowboys in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft. Nguyen spent his entire eight-year career with the Cowboys, starting 75 games and earning Pro Bowl honors in 2003.
Since Nguyen’s retirement, there have been a handful of other Asian players who have made it to the NFL. Linebacker Spencer Paysinger spent time with the New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, and Carolina Panthers from 2011-2017, while offensive lineman Menelik Watson played for the Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos from 2013-2018. cornerback Jayron Hosley also played for the Giants and Raiders from 2012-2015. Currently, there are no Asian players on any NFL rosters.
The Reasons For The Lack of Asians in the NFL
The National Football League (NFL) is considered to be the highest level of professional American football. Though the sport is widely popular, there is a significant lack of Asians in the NFL. In 2015, ESPN reported that there were only seven Asians out of 1,696 players in the NFL. This is despite the fact that Asians make up 5.6 percent of the United States population. So, why are there so few Asians in the NFL?
The cultural reasons
In recent years, the NFL has been trying to increase its presence in the Asian market. In 2014, the league hired its first director of strategy and Fan Development for Asia, Katie Loecker. But despite these efforts, there are still very few Asians in the NFL.
There are a number of cultural reasons for this. Football is not a popular sport in Asia. In China, for example, football is not part of the traditional sports culture. And even in countries where football is popular, such as Japan and South Korea, Asians have not traditionally been active in the sport.
There are also economic reasons why Asians are underrepresented in the NFL. Playing football is expensive, and many Asian families cannot afford to pay for their children to play. In addition, Asian-American families are often reluctant to have their children play contact sports because of concerns about injuries.
Finally, there is a lack of role models for Asian-American children who want to play football. There are very few Asian-American players in the NFL, so it can be difficult for young Asian-Americans to see themselves as future players.
The NFL has been working to increase its presence in the Asian market and to address some of these cultural and economic barriers. But it will likely be many years before Asians are widely represented in the league.
The physical reasons
There are a number of physical reasons why Asians are not well represented in the NFL. Firstly, Asians tend to be smaller than other groups, on average. This means that they are less likely to be able to compete with the physicality of some of the larger players in the NFL. Secondly, Asians tend to have less muscle mass than other groups. This again makes it difficult for them to compete with some of the stronger players in the NFL. Finally, Asians have a higher proportion of fast-twitch muscle fibers than other groups. This means that they tire more easily and are not able to sustain the same level of performance for as long as other groups.
The Possibility of More Asians in the NFL in the Future
Though there have not been many Asians in the NFL in the past, the possibility for more Asians in the NFL in the future is high. The NFL is becoming more globalized and with that, the talent pool is widening. Additionally, the growth of football in Asia is increasing. With these factors, it is likely that we will see more Asians in the NFL in the future.
The changing cultural landscape
Back in 2013, ESPN writer John Clayton sparked a national conversation when he said that he didn’t believe there would ever be an Asian player in the NFL. Clayton later retracted his comments, but the question remains: are there any Asians in the NFL?
The answer is a resounding yes! There are currently four Asian players in the NFL: Los Angeles Rams tight end Johnny Mundt, Seattle Seahawks linebacker Mychal Kendricks, New England Patriots long snapper Joe Cardona, and Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Shareef Miller.
Interestingly enough, all four of these players are of mixed Asian and Caucasian descent. This may be due to the fact that Asians have only recently begun to gain visibility in American society. Just a few decades ago, it would have been unthinkable for an Asian American to play in the NFL.
But times are changing, and the cultural landscape is shifting. As more and more Asians move to the United States and assimilate into American culture, it’s likely that we’ll see even more Asians in the NFL in the future.
The increasing popularity of football in Asia
Asia is a continent with a population of over four billion people, and it is no surprise that some of them are diehard football fans. In recent years, the sport has seen a surge in popularity across the region, with more and more people tuning in to watch both American and European football. This increase in interest could lead to more Asian players making their way onto NFL rosters in the future.
There are currently no Asians playing in the NFL, but that does not mean that there have never been any Asian players in the league. In fact, there have been a handful of Asian players who have had brief stints in the NFL. Hines Ward, an African-American player who was born in Seoul, Korea, is perhaps the most notable example. Ward played for the Pittsburgh Steelers for 14 seasons and was a two-time Super Bowl champion.
The fact that there have been some Asian players in the NFL shows that it is possible for Asian players to make it at the highest level of American football. With the sport continuing to grow in popularity across Asia, it is likely that we will see more Asian players making their way into the NFL in the coming years.
