Early life

George Herman Ruth Jr. was born on February 6, 1895, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the first of eight children born to George Herman Ruth Sr. and Katherine Schamberger. His father worked as a barman and later as a saloon owner, while his mother worked as a seamstress. Ruth’s parents were German-American immigrants who had little money and were not able to provide their children with much in the way of material possessions or education. As a result, Ruth’s early life was one of poverty and hardship.

Ruth was married twice and had several high-profile affairs. His first marriage, to Helen Woodford, occurred on April 17, 1914, just before he was to leave for spring training with the Baltimore Orioles The couple had one daughter, Dorothy, who was born on July 22, 1914. Ruth and Helen divorced in 1925. Ruth’s second marriage was to Claire Hodgson on February 27, 1929. The couple adopted two children: Julia Ruth Stevens, born in September 1935; and George Herman III (Babe), born in August 1937. Claire died in 1976.

In addition to his two legal wives, Ruth had relationships with various other women. These included movie star Mae West; actress Dorothy Baker; “Broadway beauty” Nancy Barnes; and baseball widows Julia McGraw (wife of John McGraw) and Eleanor Gehrig (wife of Lou Gehrig). He also had an illegitimate daughter, Josephine Huetter (later Mrs. Joseph Tracy), by a waitress named Juanita Jennings.
