Can A Woman Play In The Nfl?
Contents
Women have been playing football for years, but can they compete in the NFL? We take a look at the history of women in football and the current state of the sport.
Introduction
The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major North American professional sports leagues, the highest professional level of American football in the world, the cornerback position being its most prized position.
History of Women in the NFL
The National Football League has been a male-dominated league since its inception in 1920. In the 100 years of the NFL, there has not been a single woman to play in a regular season game. There have been a handful of women who have played in the preseason, but none in the regular season.
Women’s Football Alliance
In 2009, the Women’s Football Alliance was formed. The WFA is made up of independent, semi-pro Women’s American football teams. They play a full 11-on-11 game on a 100-yard field. As of 2012, there are 60 teams across the United States.
In 2010, the Legends Football League was formed. The LFL is a 7-on-7 tackle football league for women that play in the spring and summer months. In 2012, there are 12 teams, all located in the United States.
Independent Women’s Football League
The Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) is a full-contact Women’s American football league that began play in 2000. It is headquartered in Austin, Texas. The league has had players who previously played at the collegiate level and in semi-professional leagues such as the National Football League (NFL)’s Continental Football League and the World Football League, as well as former Olympic athletes. The IWFL is one of several women’s tackle football leagues, particularly women’s full-contact football leagues in North America that follow the model of men’s tackle football leagues such as the NFL.
In early August 2000, the IWFL held a tryout camp for prospective players in Dallas, Texas. The league originally started with 10 teams but has since expanded to 36 teams across North America. The IWFL plays most of its games during the spring but has also held games during the fall and winter months.
The IWFL is divided into two conferences, the Eastern Conference and Western Conference. Each conference is then divided into divisions. Currently, there are four divisions in each conference; however, this number has fluctuated throughout the years as teams have come and gone from the league.
Over the years, the IWFL has shown steady growth both on and off the field. More than 400 players participated in tryouts during the 2006 season and average attendance for games increased to more than 3,000 fans per game.[1] In 2007, ESPN broadcast live streaming video of two IWFL games on ESPN360.com.[2] On July 10, 2008 ESPN2 aired a live game between the Chicago Force and Dallas Diamonds which Chicago won 41–36.[3] In 2009, Fox Sports Net (now FS1) aired a live game between New York Sharks and DC Divas which New York won 28–7.[4]
Current state of women in the NFL
There is no denying that women can play football just as well as men can. In fact, there have been women playing football long before the NFL was even around. So, the real question is, can a woman play in the NFL? The answer is not as simple as you might think. There are currently no women playing in the NFL, but that could all change in the near future.
Women’s National Football Conference
The Women’s National Football Conference (WNFL) is a full-contact professional American football league for women. The league was founded in 1999, and play began in 2000. The season typically runs from April to June.
There are currently four teams in the WNFL: the Baltimore Ravens, the Chicago Force, the Dallas Diamonds, and the Kansas City Titans. All four teams are located in the United States.
The WNFL is one of several women’s American football leagues that have operated since 1968. It is also the first full-contact professional women’s football league in the United States.
Women’s Football Alliance
The Women’s Football Alliance is a full-contact, semi-professional American football league for women. Founded in 2009, the Women’s Football Alliance currently features over 50 teams across the United States.
In 2012, the WFA held its first national championship game, with the San Diego Surge defeating the Atlanta Phoenix 28-24 to win the title. The game was broadcast live on ESPN3.
While there is no official minor league system for the WFA, many of the teams are affiliated with Junior Football League teams. This provides opportunities for young women to develop their skills and play at a higher level of competition.
Conclusion
In conclusion, while there are certainly challenges that a woman would face if she tried to play in the NFL, it is not impossible. With the right training and determination, a woman could feasibly become a professional football player.
