WWE history

The Attitude Era
The Attitude Era was a period in the World Wrestling Federation’s (WWF, now WWE) history that began in late 1997 and ended in early 2001. The era was characterized by edgier storylines, which included controversial content and more mature themes. This led to an increase in the WWF’s ratings and profitability.
In June 1997, WWF owner Vince McMahon bought out rival promotion World Championship Wrestling (WCW), which resulted in the WWF becoming the only major wrestling promotion in North America. The following month, McMahon firedWWF’s lead commentator Jim Ross and replaced him with Jerry “The King” Lawler. McMahon also began to show more on-screen authority, which was known as the “Mr. McMahon” character. At Survivor Series 1997, McMahon’s hand-picked team of wrestlers (known as the “Corporate Team”) defeated a team of wrestlers who were deemed to be rebellious by McMahon (the “Opposition”). This victory helped propel the WWF’s ratings past WCW’s for the first time in many years.
During this time, several WWF wrestlers began to exhibit programming that was edgier than what was traditionally seen on wrestling television. This included using profanity, acting like rebellion against authority figures, and exhibiting sexual content. One of the most notable examples of this was “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, who became one of the most popular wrestlers in the WWF during this time period. His popularity helped increase the WWF’s viewership among adult males aged 18–34 years old, which was seen as a very important demographic by advertisers at the time.
The Attitude Era came to an end after Vince McMahon lost control of the company to his daughter Stephanie and her husband Triple H at Survivor Series 2001. Following this change in leadership, the WWF changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and toned down its programming to be more family-friendly.
