Canterbury Baseball – A Brief History
Canterbury baseball is a tradition that dates back over 100 years. The game is played between two teams of eleven players, each team having a batsman, a wicket-keeper and nine fielders. The pitch is 22 yards long and the batsman tries to hit the ball into the field of play. If the ball is not hit, the wicket-keeper catches it. The game is split into innings, with each team batting and bowling for two overs (six balls). The team that scores the most runs in their innings wins the match.
Canterbury baseball has been played in its current format since 1858, making it one of the oldest organized sports in North America The game is thought to have originated in England, but it was first played in Canada at Canterbury College (now part of the University of Toronto). The first ever recorded game took place on June 4th, 1854 between students of Trinity College and Osgoode Hall. Although there are no longer any records of who won that inaugural match, it is clear that Canterbury baseball has been a part of Canadian culture for over 150 years!
