The Carlton Basketball Club – A Brief History

The Carlton Basketball Club is one of the most successful basketball clubs in Australia, having won numerous championships at both the state and national level. The club was founded in Melbourne in 1939, and since then has been a powerhouse of Australian Basketball

The club’s first major success came in 1962, when they won the Victorian Basketball Association (VBA) championship. This was followed by further VBA titles in 1963, 1964 and 1966. In 1967, the Carlton Basketball Club joined the newly formed National Basketball League (NBL), and promptly won that competition’s inaugural championship.

The Carlton Basketball Club has remained one of the leading lights of Australian basketball ever since, winning a total of 11 NBL championships (most recently in 2008), as well as numerous other state and national titles. The club has produced some of Australia’s greatest ever players, including Olympians Andrew Gaze and Phil Smyth.

Today, the Carlton Basketball Club is based at the State Netball & Hockey Centre in Melbourne, and continues to be one of the country’s Premier Basketball clubs.

The Melbourne United Basketball Club is the leading Professional Basketball Club in Australia and plays in the National Basketball League (NBL). The club has a rich history in the sport, dating back to 1931 when it was founded as the Melbourne Athletic Club.

The partnership between the Carlton Basketball Club and the Melbourne United Basketball Club will see both organisations working closely together to grow basketball in Melbourne. This is a fantastic opportunity for our members to learn from and be inspired by some of the best players and coaches in the country.
