The best catches in CPBL baseball
Each team in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) has their own version of a catch of the year. Here are some of our favorites from the 2018 season.
In May, Chinatrust Brothers outfielder Chen Tzu-Hao made a career-saving catch against the Uni-President Lions. With the Lions up by two runs and a man on first, second baseman Huang Chi-lung hit a hard line drive to center field. Chen backpedaled to make the catch and then leapt into the air, clutching the ball against his body as he crashed into the outfield wall. The catch robbed Huang of an extra-base hit and helped preserve the Brothers’ lead.
Later that month, Lamigo Monkeys’ outfielder Lin Hung Yu made an amazing catch against the Fubon Guardians. With runners on first and second and no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Guardians pinch hitter Peng Cheng Min hit a fly ball to deep right field. Lin raced back and caught the ball just before it cleared the fence, then tumbled over into foul territory while making the catch. The Monkeys went on to win the game in Extra Innings thanks in part to Lin’s heroics.
In July, we saw two more great catches from CPBL outfielders. First, Wei Chih Hsiung of the Rakuten Monkeys made a great running catch against the Uni-President Lions. With runners on first and third and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Lions shortstop Lin Yi Chuan hit a fly ball to shallow right field. Wei raced back and made a leaping catch for out number two, then quickly got up and threw to third base to complete a double play and end the game.
Then, just days later, ChinaStars outfielder Chen Chun Hsiu made an incredible diving catch against Lamigo Monkeys pitcher Mike Loree. With runners on first and second base and one out in top of the ninth inning, Chen Chun Hsiu hit a fly ball to shallow right field. Loree tried to make a diving catch for out number two but couldn’t hang on to it, only managing to deflect it slightly with his glove. That’s when Chen Chun Hsiu showed off his amazing speed by sprinting over from shallow right field, diving full extension forward, and snagging Loree’s deflection before it hit ground for an unbelievable putout!
