De La Salle High School’s Baseball team is looking to defend their California Interscholastic Federation Division I State Championship title this season. The Spartans will have their work cut out for them as they are scheduled to play some of the best teams in the country. Some of the must-see match-ups on the Spartans’ schedule include:

-Mar 28 vs. Servite (Anaheim, CA)
-Apr 11 vs. De Sales (Walnut, CA)
-Apr 18 vs. Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA)
-May 9 vs. Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA)

The Must Have List

As the season rapidly approaches make sure you have the following:

1. A current physical on file with the athletic office- no player will be allowed to try-out without one.
2. All completed paperwork turned into the athletic office or you will not be allowed to try-out.
3. Make sure your gear is in good condition and that you have everything you need including: a glove, bat, cleats, and any other personal protective gear (i.e. cup, mouthguard, etc.).
4. Be ready to work hard and have a great attitude!

The De La Salle Baseball team is a highly competitive team that is always looking for talented players. If you are a talented player who is looking to play at the collegiate level, then you should definitely consider trying out for the team. The roster is always full of talented players, but there are a few must-have players that every team needs.

The Must Have List

Before you can build a great roster, you need to understand what skills and qualities are necessary for each position. This guide will give you a breakdown of what De La Salle is looking for in each player, so you can build the best possible team.

Pitcher
-A pitcher must have a strong arm and good control of the ball.
-Pitchers should be able to throw strikes consistently and induce weak contact from hitters.
-De La Salle pitchers should be able to throw all of the following pitches: fastball, curveball, slider, and changeup.

Catcher
-A catcher must have good catch-and-throw skills and be able to block balls in the dirt.
-Catchers should also have a strong arm to prevent would-be base stealers.
-Offensively, catchers should have a good understanding of the strike zone and be able to put the ball in play consistently.

First baseman
-First basemen must have goodhands and be able to stretch for throws in the dirt.
-First basemen should also have a strong arm to make plays on runners at second base.
-Offensively, first basemen should be patient hitters with good power. They should also be able torun the bases well.

Second baseman
-Second basemen must have good range and be able to make plays on balls hit up the middle.
They should also have a strong arm to make throws from different angles.

-Offensively, second basemen should be quick runners with good bunting skills. They should alsohave a good understanding of the strike zone

The Pitching Rotation

The Pitching Rotation is key to any team’s success and the De La Salle Baseball team is no different. Our Pitching Rotation includes:

-Ace: Mr. Earl Johnson
-No. 2: Mr. Brian Thomas
-No. 3: Mr. Steve Coleman

To complete our Pitching Rotation, we also have two relief pitchers:
-Mr. Ryan Gomez
-Mr. Josh Perez

The Infield

The De La Salle varsity baseball team has a strong lineup this year, with plenty of experience on the infield. The team will be led by seniors Kyler Kimberlin, who will play first base, and second baseman Matt Justi. Kimberlin is a four-year starter who is batting .400 with four home runs and 22 RBIs so far this season. Justi is a three-year starter and is hitting .315 with three home runs and 18 RBIs. The infield will also feature junior third baseman Ryan Kelly, who is batting .287 with two home runs and 15 RBIs, and senior shortstop Jason Pineda, who is hitting .253 with one home run and 12 RBIs.

The Outfield

The outfield is one of the most important aspects of baseball. It’s where the majority of the action takes place and where the game is often won or lost. A good outfield can make a big difference in a team’s success.

De La Salle has a strong outfield that includes some of the best players in the country. Here is a look at the team’s outfielders:

Andrew McCutchen: McCutchen is one of the best all-around players in baseball. He’s a five-tool player who can do it all on the field. He’s a solid hitter with good power, and he’s also an outstanding fielder. He’s won multiple Gold Glove awards and is a perennial All-Star. McCutchen is the team’s leader in the outfield and one of its best players overall.

Bryce Harper: Harper is one of baseball’s brightest young stars. He’s an electric player with tremendous power and an advanced approach at the plate. He’s also a very good fielder, and he has a strong arm. Harper has already won two NL MVP awards and is one of the game’s most exciting players.

Jason Heyward: Heyward is an excellent all-around player who does everything well on the field. He’s a good hitter with some pop, and he’s also an outstanding defender. He has great range in the outfield and a strong arm. Heyward is a key member of the team’s defensive unit, and he also provides some needed offense.

The Pitching Rotation

The De La Salle baseball team has a solid pitching rotation that will keep opposing teams guessing all season long. Here are the pitchers that will be leading the team to victory this year:

-Connor Flynn: A senior, Connor is a hard-throwing right-hander who has been a key member of the pitching rotation for the past two years. He has good control and mixes his pitches well, keeping hitters off balance.

-Ethan Nguyen: A junior, Ethan is a left-hander with a deceptive delivery. He sneaks his fastball by hitters, and his off-speed pitches have good movement. He’s expected to be one of the team’s top pitchers this year.

-Gavin Griffin: A sophomore, Gavin is a tall, lanky right-hander who throws a heavy sinkerball. His sinker gets a lot of ground balls, and he’s also got a good curveball that he can use to get strikeouts. He’s still developing his control, but he has the potential to be a really dominant pitcher.

The Infield

The infield is the area of the baseball field closest to the batter. It is composed of four positions: first base, second base, third base and shortstop. The first baseman is positioned at first base; the second baseman, at second base; the third baseman, at third base; and the shortstop is positioned between second and third base.

The outfield is the area of the baseball field beyond the infield. The positions in the outfield are right field, center field, and left field. The right fielder is the defensive player positioned closest to first base, the center fielder is positioned in the middle of the outfield, and the left fielder is positioned closest to third base.

The duties of outfielders are to catch fly balls hit into their part of the field and to prevent runners from getting on base by fielding balls that have been hit into play. Outfielders also are responsible for throwing balls that have been hit or thrown to them back into the infield so that other defensive players can make plays.

It’s that time of year again. Time to dust off the cleats and get ready for another season of De La Salle baseball. The team is looking good this year and they have a solid roster. Here is the list of players that you need to know.

The Must Have List

Planning on trying out for the De La Salle High School Baseball team? Below is a list of what you will need in order to be eligible to tryout.
-Athletic physical dated AFTER February 1st of the current year and on file in the Athletic Department prior to the first day of tryouts. The physical must be valid for the ENTIRETY of the season in which you are playing.
-If you have had a concussion in the past, you MUST have a concussion baseline test on file in the Athletic Department PRIOR to the first day of tryouts. If you have not had a concussion, you do not need this test.
-You must have either completed 10 hours of community service or paid a $100 buy-out fee PRIOR to the first day of tryouts. Community service verification forms can be found on our website under the Community Service tab or picked up in the Athletic Department.
-All Jewell-Osco & Panera Bread fundraiser money and forms must be turned into Mrs. Gough in the Athletic Department prior to the first day of tryouts.
-If you are currently participating in a winter sport at De La Salle, you MUST turn in your game uniform prior to receiving your baseball uniform.
-Baseball tryouts will begin Monday, March 16th after school and will run until Wednesday, March 18th.

The Pitching Rotation

In baseball, the pitching rotation is the order in which pitchers will pitch during the course of a game or series. A preseason or in-season rotational order is typically set by a team’s manager. A starting pitcher does not need to pitch five innings (the minimum required for a win) to earn a win, but must throw at least three complete innings and cannot come out of the game except for an inning-ending double play or due to injury. A relief pitcher cannot come into the game with runners on base unless he takes over for another player on the bases, so these types of pitchers typically do not enter Rotations until later innings.

The Infield

The infield consists of four positions: first base, second base, third base and shortstop. The second baseman covers the area between second and first base, as well as fielding balls hit in his direction. The third baseman is responsible for the area between third base and home plate, as well as fielding balls hit in his direction. The shortstop is responsible for the area between second and third base, as well as fielding balls hit in his direction.

The Outfield

There are three outfield positions: left field, center field, and right field. Each position has its own specific responsibilities.

Left fielders must have a strong arm to throw out runners who try to advance from second base to third base. They also need to be able to catch fly balls that are hit to their side of the field.

Center fielders need to be very fast so that they can run down balls that are hit deep into the outfield. They also need to have good instincts so that they can make quick decisions on whether to catch a ball or let it drop.

Right fielders must have a strong arm to throw out runners who try to advance from first base to second base. They also need to be able to catch fly balls that are hit to their side of the field.
