Why Punk Left
On January 27, 2014, Punk shocked the WWE Universe by walking out on WWE following the Royal Rumble. Punk would later reveal that the final straw for him was finding out that he was going to have to face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 30, a match he saw as unfair.
Money
In an interview with Colt Cabana on the Art of Wrestling podcast, Punk claimed that WWE chairman Vince McMahon and CEO Stephanie McMahon stiffed him out of royalties for merchandise sales. He also said that McMahon never told him how much he was making on these sales, so Punk didn’t know he was being cheated until after he left the company.
“I found out that I was making zero percent of my action figure royalties, and I had no idea,” Punk said. “My wife works in accounting, and one night she just starts poring over numbers and she’s like, ‘Hey, by the way, you’re making zero percent of your action figure royalties.’ And I’m like, ‘What?’ And then it all started to click.”
Punk said he went to WWE’s legal team and asked for an audit of his merchandise sales, but they refused to cooperate. He then went to McMahon directly and asked for a raise, but McMahon reportedly told him that he was already being paid more than anyone else in the company.
Creative Differences
Punk’s problems with WWE began to surface in early 2014 when, during an interview with Colt Cabana on the Art of Wrestling podcast, Punk accused WWE doctor Chris Amann of misdiagnosing a staph infection in his elbow. Punk also claimed that WWE had ignored his complaints of other injuries and failed to provide him with adequate medical care.
A few months later, Punk left WWE abruptly after being told that he would not be given time off to recover from his injuries. It was later revealed that Punk had been scheduled to face Triple H at WrestleMania 30, but had quit the company before the event.
In the years that followed, Punk sporadically gave interviews in which he spoke candidly about his time in WWE and his reasons for leaving. In 2017, Punk signed a deal with the UFC and made his debut as a mixed martial artist, but he has yet to fight for the promotion.
