Whitlock was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended Warren Central High School in Indianapolis and Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he majored in journalism. After college, Whitlock began his career as a sports columnist for The Kansas City Star in 1991. He later became a nationally syndicated sports columnist for AOL Sports. In 2006, he began working for Fox Sports as a columnist and television personality. In 2011, he returned to The Kansas City Star as a columnist and editor-at-large. In 2013, he left the newspaper to join ESPN as a contributor to ESPN’s website Grantland. In 2015, he became a senior writer for ESPN’s The Undefeated.

Whitlock was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of Lonette Whitlock (née Taylor), a high school English teacher, and Calvin Whitlock, a city bus driver.[1][2][3] He has two sisters and one brother.
