Did the NFL Mandate Vaccines for Players?

The NFL has not mandated that players get the COVID-19 vaccine, but some teams are encouraging players to get vaccinated.

Introduction

On December 10, 2020, the NFL issued a memo to all 32 clubs mandating that all players and staff get vaccinated for the flu and for COVID-19 “as soon as vaccines become available to them.” The memo, sent by NFL Chief Medical Officer Dr. Allen Sills, said that the NFL was “strongly recommending” the vaccines but stopped short of saying they are required.

However, many experts have said that the NFL’s mandate is essentially the same as a requirement because players who do not get vaccinated will not be allowed to participate in games or practices. The memo also said that players who cannot get vaccinated for medical reasons will be allowed to remain on the team if they undergo regular testing and wear masks during games and practices.

What the NFL’s Statement Says

The NFL released the following statement on behalf of Dr. Allen Sills, the league’s chief medical officer: “As has been the case throughout the pandemic, we will continue to consult with our network of independent medical consultants and our team physicians, who guide our decisions about all health and safety matters.

While there are currently no league-wide mandates for any particular course of action related to vaccines, all options are being reviewed in consultation with our consultants. Our goal is always to do what is best for the health and safety of our players, personnel and fans, and we will continue to consult with experts until that determination is made.”

What the NFLPA’s Statement Says

The National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) released the following statement on January 28, 2021:

“The NFLPA has been in constant communication with the league office and our player leadership about the league’s vaccine program. We have urged the league to work with us to develop a safe and consistent protocol that meets the needs of all players. We are encouraged by the progress that has been made and are hopeful that an agreement can be reached soon.”

What NFL Players Have to Say

The NFL has not mandated that players receive the Covid-19 vaccine, but some players have voiced their opinions on the topic. While some think that the vaccine is a personal decision, others believe that it should be required in order to protect the team.

“I think it’s a personal decision. I’m not comfortable with getting the vaccine, so I won’t be getting it,” said tight end Jordan Reed of the San Francisco 49ers.

“I think it should be mandatory. We’re a team and we’re all in this together, so we need to do everything we can to protect each other,” said defensive tackle Calais Campbell of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“I’m not sure yet. I want to do more research before I make a decision,” said wide receiver Keenan Allen of the Los Angeles Chargers.

Conclusion

The NFL has not mandated vaccines for players. However, the league has said that it “strongly recommends” that players get vaccinated for seasonal flu and encourages them to get vaccinated for other illnesses, such as hepatitis A.
