Ray Mcelrathbey was a three-star recruit coming out of high school, according to 247Sports. He played his college career at Clemson from 2006-2010. During his time at Clemson, he was a part of two ACC Championship teams. He was also named ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2010. After his collegiate career, he was not drafted by an NFL team.

McElrathbey was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He attended Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville, South Carolina, and played high school football for the Hillcrest Rams. As a senior, he was a second-team All-State selection and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

All-American

Ray was a three-star recruit coming out of high school according to Rivals.com. He was ranked as the No. 35 athlete in the country and the No. 12 player in the state of South Carolina. He committed to Clemson University over offers from over 20 schools, including Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Miami (FL), Nebraska, Notre Dame, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech.

As a freshman in 2006, he played in all 13 games as a reserve running back and on special teams. He had 19 carries for 73 yards (3.8 avg) and one touchdown. He also had two receptions for nine yards (4.5 avg) and returned eight kickoffs for 158 yards (19.8 avg). During his sophomore season in 2007, he again played in all 13 games as a reserve running back and on special teams. He had 10 carries for 44 yards (4.4 avg).

In 2008, he took over as the starting running back after an injury to C.J. Spiller midway through the season. For the year he ran for 1,061 yards on 191 carries with 11 touchdowns while adding 44 receptions for 473 yards and four receiving touchdowns en route to being named a first-team All-American by ESPN

Ray Mcelrathbey was not selected in the 2009 NFL Draft. He was signed by the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent on April 27, 2009. He was waived on September 5 and re-signed to the practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster on December 12, 2009.

Ray Mcelrathbey joined the New England Patriots in 2009. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the team. He was released by the Patriots on September 5, 2009 and was re-signed to their practice squad on October 14, 2009. He was released again on November 17, 2009.
