The game last night
The Vanderbilt Commodores won their game against the Tennessee Volunteers last night with a score of 7-2. This win extends their win streak to 11 games and is their 26th win of the season. The Commodores are now 26-10 on the season and 11-5 in SEC play.
The score
The Vanderbilt Commodores beat the University of Detroit Mercy Titans 10-3 last night, bringing their season record to 27-27. It was a hot night at Hawkins Field, with a game-time temperature of 92 degrees, but that didn’t stop the ‘Dores from putting up some big numbers.
Leadoff hitter JJ Bleday got things started for Vanderbilt in the bottom of the first with a solo home run, his 19th of the season. The Commodores would add two more runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Austin Martin and a sacrifice fly by Ethan Paul. Detroit would get on the board in the top of the third with a solo home run by Levi Jordan, but that would be all the scoring they would do for the rest of the game.
Vanderbilt would add three more runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Philip Clarke and a two-run homer by Mandela Egbo, his first of the season. The final score came in the bottom of the eighth when Martin tripled to drive in Bleday and Clarke.
The win was Vanderbilt’s sixth in their last seven games and put them above .500 for the first time since April 5th. They will look to keep their winning streak alive tonight when they take on Detroit again at 7 PM CT.
Vanderbilt’s Next Game
Vanderbilt’s next game is against the University of Alabama on March 3rd. Vanderbilt has been doing really well this season and they are currently ranked number one in the SEC. This will be a really tough game for Vanderbilt, but they have a chance to win if they play their best.
Who they’re playing
The Vanderbilt Commodores are set to take on the LSU Tigers in a 3-game series this weekend. The Tigers are ranked No. 1 in the nation, but that doesn’t phase the Commodores, who have proved time and time again that they can hang with the best of the best.
In the first game of the series, Vanderbilt will send out right-hander Drake Fellows to face off against LSU left-hander Zack Hess. Fellows has been phenomenal this season, boasting a 5-1 record and a 2.48 ERA. Hess, on the other hand, has struggled as of late and will be looking to get back on track against a tough Vanderbilt lineup.
The second game will feature two of the best pitchers in all of college baseball: Vanderbilt righty Kumar Rocker and LSU righty Jake Smith. Rocker has been nearly unhittable this season, posting a 9-0 record and a 0.75 ERA. Smith has also been excellent, going 8-1 with a 2.48 ERA. This should be an incredibly exciting matchup between two of the best teams in the country.
In the final game of the series, Vanderbilt will turn to junior right-hander Mason Hickman to take on LSU lefty Nick Storz. Hickman has been very good this season, posting a 6-3 record and a 3.86 ERA. Storz, meanwhile, has been up-and-down but will be looking to end the series on a high note for LSU.
No matter what happens this weekend, it’s sure to be an exciting series between two of the best teams in college baseball.
