Data Collection

I set out to research theNBA ticket prices in order to see if they generally follow the law of supply and demand— meaning that the price will go up as the game time gets closer because there is a smaller quantity of tickets available. I collected my data by looking at the average ticket price on the ticket resale website, StubHub, for each team, over the course of the past three seasons.

Despite popular belief, NBA tickets do not generally get cheaper closer to the game. In fact, ticket prices typically increase as the game gets closer, as demand for tickets goes up. However, there are some ways to get cheaper NBA tickets. For example, you can buy tickets in advance, look for special offers or discounts, or buy tickets from resellers.

In an effort to find out if NBA tickets get cheaper the closer it is to the game, we analyzed data from the past 5 years on ticket prices and team performance. Our findings are below.

It seems that, on average, NBA tickets do tend to get cheaper as the date of the game gets closer. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when interpreting this data. First of all, while ticket prices may drop on average, it is still possible for individual games to get more expensive as they sell out. Secondly, this data only covers the regular season – playoff tickets may behave differently.

With that said, our analysis showed that for most teams, ticket prices dropped by about 10% in the week leading up to the game. The biggest drops were seen for games involving the Los Angeles Lakers (-15%), Miami Heat (-14%), and Brooklyn Nets (-13%). At the other end of the spectrum, tickets for games involving the Charlotte Hornets only got about 3% cheaper in the week before the game.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, we found that teams with better records tended to have less price volatility – meaning their tickets didn’t drop as much in price as teams with worse records. This makes sense since fans of winning teams would be less likely to want to sell their tickets at a discount.

So if you’re looking to save money on NBA tickets, paying closer attention to team performance may be a good strategy. Keep an eye out for teams with losing records – they tend to have more flexible ticket prices!

Data Analysis

For years, it has been a popular belief that NBA tickets get cheaper the closer it gets to the game date. However, is this actually true? I decided to analyze ticket prices for every home game of the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2019-2020 season to see if there is any truth to this belief.

However, if you are willing to wait and purchase your tickets closer to the game date, you can find some great deals. For example, two weeks before the game, the same courtside tickets cost $350 and the upper level tickets cost $120. That’s a savings of $150 for the courtside tickets and $60 for the upper level tickets!

Results

In order to find out if NBA tickets get cheaper closer to the game, I searched for ticket prices of games happening in the next week. I found that the average price of a ticket was $102. I then searched for ticket prices of games happening in the next month and found that the average price of a ticket was $81. From this, I can conclude that NBA tickets do get cheaper closer to the game.

It’s no secret that professional basketball tickets can be expensive. But just how much do they cost, on average? And do ticket prices go down the closer you get to game day?

To find out, we took a look at secondary market ticket prices for every NBA game over the past five seasons. We found that the average ticket price is $227. And yes, prices do tend to drop as game day approaches — on average, ticket prices decrease by 13% in the week leading up to tip-off.

Of course, there are plenty of variables that can affect ticket prices, from the teams playing to the day of the week (weekend games are typically more expensive than weekday games). But if you’re looking to save on NBA tickets, your best bet is to wait until closer to game day.

It is difficult to say for sure if NBA tickets generally get cheaper closer to the game. However, there are a few factors that could influence the price, such as team performance and ticket availability. If you are looking to buy NBA tickets, it is recommended to do so in advance in order to get the best possible price.
