The “Braves” name, which was first used in 1912, originates from a term for a Native American warrior. They are nicknamed “the Bravos”, and often refer to themselves as “America’s Team”. From 1991 to 2005, the Braves were one of the most successful teams in MLB, winning division titles an unprecedented 14 consecutive times (1991–2005), producing one of the greatest starting pitchers of all time in Greg Maddux, as well as two Gold Glove-winning catchers in Javier López and Johnny Estrada. The franchise won the World Series three times during that stretch (1991, 1995, 1996).
However, the team’s success waned after their move to Turner Field; they only made the playoffs twice from 2006 to 2013. In 2017 after an unsuccessful season, the Braves announced their intention to rebuild their team for 2018 and beyond with payroll flexibility while they move into their new ballpark SunTrust Park.
