SEO Basics
There are a few SEO (Search Engine Optimization) basics that you should know in order to improve your website’s ranking in the search engines. SEO is all about making your website more visible to potential customers. The higher your website ranks in the search engines, the more likely people are to find it. There are a few key things you can do to improve your website’s SEO.
Set up GSC and Bing Webmaster tools
Configuring Google Search Console (GSC) and Bing Webmaster Tools is essential for any website that wants to rank in Google and Bing. You can use either platform to submit your sitemap, request indexing of new or updated pages, submit changes or removals, view traffic and search analytics data, and much more.
To get started with GSC, you’ll need to verify ownership of your website. This can be done using either a Domain Name System (DNS) record, an HTML file upload, or by linking your Google Analytics account. Once you’ve verified ownership, you can start exploring all of the features that GSC has to offer.
Bing Webmaster Tools works similarly to GSC, but there are a few key differences. For example, instead of verifying ownership via DNS or HTML file upload, you can use a Bing-branded XML verification file. You’ll also find that the look and feel of BWT is different than GSC, but the functionality is very similar.
If you want your website to rank in Google and Bing, setting up GSC and BWT should be at the top of your SEO to-do list!
Set up Google Analytics
Google Analytics is a powerful tool that can help you track the progress of your SEO campaign and understand your website’s traffic. In order to use Google Analytics, you will need to set up an account and add a small piece of code to your website. Once you have done this, you will be able to see how much traffic your website is receiving, where it is coming from, and what keywords people are using to find your site.
Install and configure an SEO plugin (wordpress)
If you’re using WordPress, there are a number of great plugins that can help you with your SEO. Yoast SEO is one of the most popular, and it’s free.
Here’s how to install and configure Yoast SEO:
1. First, you’ll need to download the Yoast SEO plugin from the WordPress plugin repository.
2. Next, log into your WordPress site and go to the Plugins page. Click “Add New” and then “Upload Plugin.”
3. Select the ZIP file you downloaded and click “Install Now.”
4. Once the plugin is installed, click “Activate Plugin.”
5. You’ll be redirected to the Yoast SEO configuration wizard. Click “Let’s go!” to continue.
6. On the next screen, you’ll be asked to select which type of content you’ll be optimized for. Choose ” blog posts” and click “Continue.”
If you want to optimize your site for more than one type of content, you can come back and run the wizard again later.
7. On the next screen, you’ll be asked to choose a focus keyword for your blog post. This is the keyword or phrase that you want to rank for in search engines.
Enter your focus keyword and click “Continue.”
If you’re not sure what keyword or phrase to choose, don’t worry! Yoast will give you some suggestions based on the other content on your site. Just choose one that makes sense for your blog post and click “Continue.”
8 .On the next screen, Yoast will give you some tips on how to optimize your blog post for your chosen focus keyword. Take a look at these tips and make sure to implement them in your post before publishing it!
9 .When you’re finished optimizing your blog post, click “Publish” or “Update” to make it live on your website!
Keyword Research
Autoblogging can be a great way to quickly generate content for your website without having to put in a lot of effort. You can find PLR articles, spin them, and post them to your autoblog which will save you time.
Identify your competitors
In order to do keyword research, you need to identify your competitors. You can do this by searching for your target keywords in Google and seeing who comes up on the first page of results. These are your main competitors. But you should also look at the ads that appear on the side of the page (these are called “Sponsored Links”) as well as any companies that come up in the “People Also Ask” section at the bottom of the page. These are all companies that you’ll need to keep an eye on as you do your research.
Conduct a keyword gap analysis
When you are trying to improve your website’s ranking in the search engines, one of the first things you need to do is conduct keyword research. This will help you understand what terms people are using to find websites like yours, and how difficult it will be to rank for those terms.
One way to approach keyword research is to conduct a keyword gap analysis. This is where you compare the keywords that you are targeting to the keywords that your competitors are targeting. If there is a big gap between the two, then you know that you have some work to do in order to catch up.
To conduct a keyword gap analysis, all you need is a list of the keywords that you are targeting, and a list of the keywords that your competitors are targeting. You can find these lists by doing a simple Google search, or by using a keyword research tool like Google Keyword Planner or Moz Keyword Explorer.
Once you have your lists, it’s time to start comparing them. Look for any obvious gaps between the two lists. Are there any terms that your competitors are ranking for that you are not? If so, those are the terms that you need to focus on.
You can also use a tool like SEMrush or Moz Keyword Difficulty Tool to help you find additional keywords that you may be able to rank for. These tools will show you how difficult it will be to rank for certain keywords, based on factors like the competition level and the search volume.
After conducting your keyword research, it’s important to create content around the keywords that you want to rank for. Make sure that your website and blog posts are optimized for those keywords so that people can find your site when they search for those terms.
Find your main ‘money’ keywords
Some keywords are worth more than others. The worth of a keyword is assess by how much traffic it will bring to your website, and how much of that traffic is likely to convert into paying customers.
The best way to find valuable keywords is to research your industry and understand what terms potential customers are using to find products and services like yours. Once you have a good understanding of the language your customers use, you can start using keyword research tools to identify specific terms that you should be targeting.
There are a number of different keyword research tools available, but some of the most popular include Google Adwords Keyword Planner, Moz Keyword Explorer, and SEMrush Keyword Research Tool. Each of these tools will allow you to enter a seed keyword or phrase and generate a list of related keywords.
Once you have a list of potential keywords, you can start evaluating them based on their search volume and expected conversion rate. Some keywords will be worth targeting even if they have low search volume, if they are likely to convert well. Others may have high search volume but be less likely to convert, so they may not be worth the investment.
Once you have a list of high-value keywords, you can start incorporating them into your website content, meta tags, and other areas to make sure your site is optimised for search engines and potential customers alike.
Technical SEO
Technical SEO is the practice of improving the ranking of a website in search engine results pages (SERPs), with the goal of earning higher web traffic levels and improving the overall visibility of the site. Technical SEO can be divided into two main categories: on-page SEO and off-page SEO.
Leverage “Inspect URL” feature in GSC
One of the most useful features in Google Search Console (GSC) is the “Inspect URL” feature. This allows you to submit a URL to GSC and get feedback on any issues that Google sees with that particular URL.
Ensure your website is mobile-friendly
A responsive website design ensures that your site can be accessed and easily viewed on a mobile device. In addition to a mobile-friendly design, there are other technical SEO factors to consider when optimizing your website for mobile users. Some of these technical SEO factors include:
-Page load speed
-Site structure
-Image optimization
-Content accessibility
Mobile-friendliness is an important ranking factor for search engines like Google. In fact, Google has stated that they are now using mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal in their search algorithm. This means that if your website is not mobile-friendly, you could be at a disadvantage in the search engine results pages (SERPs).
Check your site’s loading speed
It’s important to make sure your site loads quickly for both users and search engine crawlers. A slow site can negatively impact your search engine rankings and frustrate visitors.
There are a few ways to check your site’s loading speed:
– Use a tool like Pingdom or GTmetrix to test your page speed and get recommendations for improvements.
– Check your server response time (the time it takes for your server to respond to a request) using a tool like WebPagetest.
– Use Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool to get insights into how you can improve your site’s speed.
On-page and Content
On-page SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing a website to rank higher in search engine results. The main goal of on-page SEO is to tell search engines what your website is about so that they can rank it accordingly. Content is a key element of on-page SEO, and that’s what we’ll be focusing on in this article.
If your website’s title tags are not effective, you may be missing out on valuable traffic from search engines. A title tag is the HTML code that specifies the title of a web page. The title tag is one of the most important elements of on-page optimization, as it tells search engines what the page is about and helps them determine whether or not to include it in their search results.
Unfortunately, many website owners make common mistakes with their title tags, such as using duplicate or missing tags, or truncating them so that they are not effective. Fixing these issues can be simple and easy, and can make a big difference in your website’s traffic.
Find and fix duplicate or missing meta descriptions
If you have multiple pages with identical or similar content, you might want to consider consolidating those pages. Duplicate content can hurt your SEO and cause your pages to rank lower in search results.
To find duplicate or missing meta descriptions:
-Go to Google Search Console and select your website.
-Click on the “Search Appearance” tab.
-Click on the “HTML Improvements” link.
-Here you’ll see a list of any duplicate or missing meta descriptions on your site.
To fix duplicate or missing meta descriptions:
-Edit the page title and meta description to make each one unique.
-Save your changes and re-submit your sitemap to Google Search Console.
If you want to appeal to Google, make sure you’re using H1 tags correctly. That means one H1 per page, folks! Here’s what our friends at Moz have to say on the subject:
“Historically, the HTML tag was used to indicate the heading of a section. Historically, there could only be one H1 per page — and it was reserved for the title of that page. Using more than one H1 on a page was (and still is) perceived as poor SEO practice, because it confuses both users and search engine crawlers.”
Off-Page SEO
Off-page SEO is the process of optimizing a website for ranking in the search engine results pages (SERPs). It is the process of optimizing the website’s backlinks, social signals, and overall authority.
Analyze your competitor’s link profile
Off-page SEO is the process of optimizing a website for Google with actions taken outside of the actual site. This type of optimization often focuses on link building, or acquiring links from other websites that point back to your own.
Link building is a complex and ever-changing strategy, but there are some general methods you can use to get started. One way to find new link opportunities is to analyze your competitor’s link profile. This can give you an idea of the kinds of sites that are linking to them, and potentially how you can get links from similar sources.
To start, choose a few competitor sites in your industry and run them through a link analysis tool like Moz’s Open Site Explorer. This will give you a list of all the sites linking to them, as well as some metrics about each site. Take a look at the list and see if there are any patterns or opportunities that stand out.
For example, if you see that most of your competitor’s links are coming from guest posts, you could reach out to some bloggers in your industry and offer to write a guest post for their site. Or, if you notice that many of their links are coming from directories, you could submit your site to some relevant directories.
Of course, this is just a starting point—you’ll need to experiment and test different strategies to see what works best for your site. But analyzing your competitor’s link profile is a good way to get ideas for building new links back to your own site.
Conduct a link intersect analysis
Link intersect is defined as finding out which websites link to your competitors, but not to you. You can use this data to identify opportunities for building new relationships and improving your SEO.
There are a few different ways to conduct a link intersect analysis. The most common method is to use a tool like Moz’s Link Intersect tool. This tool allows you to enter up to five competitor URL’s, and it will return a list of websites that link to any of those URL’s, but not to yours.
Another way to conduct a link intersect analysis is to manually check each of your competitor’s backlinks using a tool like Majestic or Ahrefs. This method is more time-consuming, but it can be more accurate than using a tool like Moz’s Link Intersect tool.
Once you have a list of websites that link to your competitors, but not to you, reach out to those websites and try to get them to link to your website as well. This can be done by creating great content, reaching out directly to the webmaster, or by using other link building tactics.
Target your competitors’ broken backlinks
One of the most effective white hat link building techniques is taking advantage of your competitor’s broken backlinks. By finding and targeting these links, you can quickly acquire some high-quality links of your own.
To find these opportunities, start by performing a link audit of your competitor’s backlink profile. Look for any links that are no longer working or that are pointing to 404 pages. Once you’ve found a few potential targets, reach out to the site owners and let them know about the broken link. Inquire about the possibility of replacing the broken link with a link to your site. In most cases, they’ll be more than happy to oblige.
This technique may require a bit of extra work upfront, but it’s well worth it. Not only will you acquire some high-quality links, but you’ll also be building relationships with other site owners in your industry.
