Sanders was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 6th round of the 1988 MLB draft. He did not sign with the Royals, choosing instead to play football for Florida State University. In 1989, Sanders won the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back. He was also a consensus All-American in 1988 and 1989, and a two-time All-ACC selection. Sanders helped lead Florida State to a national championship in his junior year.

In 1990, Sanders became embroiled in a contract dispute with the Atlanta Falcons, who had selected him in the first round of that year’s NFL draft. The Falcons threatened to file tampering charges against San Francisco 49ers head coach George Seifert and general manager John McVay after they allegedly offered Sanders more money than he was due to earn under his rookie contract while he was still under contract with Florida State. The Falcons eventually traded Sanders to the 49ers for five draft picks (two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and a fourth-round pick).

In 1992, he helped lead the 49ers to victory in Super Bowl XXIX.Sanders then signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent prior to the 1995 season. The following year, he led the league with 8 interceptions for 126 yards and 2 touchdowns en route to being named NFL Defensive Player of the Year by AP and being selected for his sixth Pro Bowl. In 1997, Sanders intercepts 3 passes thrown by Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre en route to helping Dallas win their fifth Super Bowl championship in team history by defeating Green Bay 35–21 in Super Bowl XXXII at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego

Post-NFL career

After his playing career ended, Sanders worked as an NFL Network analyst. He was also a coach for the Trinity Christian Tigers, a youth football team he founded in 1999. In September 2011, Sanders became the offensive coordinator at Prime Prep Academy, a charter school that he co-founded in Texas. He resigned from his position in October 2013.

In May 2014, Sanders was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
