Mississippi State’s Baseball History
Mississippi State University has a long and storied history when it comes to baseball. The university has produced numerous Major League Baseball players, including some of the game’s biggest stars. Mississippi State has also been one of the top collegiate baseball programs in the country, winning multiple conference championships and making several trips to the College World Series.
The team’s first season
Mississippi State’s first baseball team took the field in 1885. The team played its first game against a local high school. Mississippi State’s first official game came against Auburn in 1886. The team finished the season with a record of 2-2.
In 1889, Mississippi State joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA). The team won the SIAA championship in 1891. Mississippi State left the SIAA after the 1897 season.
The team rejoined the SIAA in 1904 and won another championship in 1915. Mississippi State left the SIAA for good after the 1947 season.
The team’s first game
In February 1885, the first organized baseball game in Mississippi State history took place in Starkville between the campus YMCA and the city’s “Young Americas” club. Mississippi State won that game by a score of 22-3. The team would go on to play two more games that season, both against teams from other colleges in the state.
It would be another decade before Mississippi State fielded another baseball team. In 1895, a team was assembled to play three games against other colleges in the state, but the team disbanded after those games. Baseball would not be played at Mississippi State again until 1904, when a team was formed to play four games against nearby high schools.
The team’s first win
Mississippi State’s baseball team earned its first victory on March 8, 1885, defeating Auburn 4-3. The team would go on to finish the season with a record of 3-3.
In the years that followed, the team would have sporadic success, but it wasn’t until 1904 that Mississippi State posted a winning record, going 12-11. The team continued to improve in the years that followed, and by 1909 they had their first 20-win season, finishing the year with a record of 20-5.
The team’s success continued in the 1910s, as they won at least 30 games in five different seasons. They also made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1920, but were defeated in the first round.
The team’s fortunes changed in the 1930s, as they struggled to find consistent success. They did make another appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1939, but were once again defeated in the first round.
The 1940s were somewhat better for Mississippi State’s baseball team, as they managed to have a winning record in four out of 10 seasons. They also made two more appearances in the NCAA Tournament, but were unable to get past the first round either time.
