Introduction
Syracuse, New York is the fifth largest city in the state of New York and is the county seat of Onondaga County. The city is located in Central New York and sits at the junction of Interstate 81 and Interstate 90. According to the 2010 census, the city has a population of 145,170, making it the 174th largest city in the United States. Syracuse is also home to Syracuse University, a large research university with over 22,000 students enrolled.
The History of Syracuse Baseball
Syracuse, New York has a long and rich history when it comes to baseball. The very first professional baseball game was played in Syracuse back in 1869, and the city has been home to many different minor league and professional teams over the years. However, Syracuse does not currently have a professional baseball team.
The last professional baseball team to call Syracuse home was the Syracuse Chiefs, who were the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. The Chiefs played their last game in 2018 and then moved to nearby Gwinnett, Georgia, where they became the Gwinnett Stripers.
There have been several efforts to bring professional baseball back to Syracuse since the Chiefs left, but so far nothing has come to fruition. In 2019, there was an attempt to bring a Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays to the city, but that deal fell through.
So for now, Syracuse is without a professional baseball team. However, there is still plenty of minor league and amateur baseball being played in the city. The Syracuse Mets (formerly the Buffalo Bisons) are Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets that play their home games at NBT Bank Stadium. There are also several college teams in the area, including Syracuse University’s Orange.
The Syracuse Baseball Team Today
The Syracuse Baseball team is a Division I college baseball program that competes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The team is currently coached by Craig Keilitz and plays its home games at Syracuse’s NBT Bank Stadium.
The program has appeared in 13 NCAA Division I Baseball Championships, winning the title in 1956. It has also produced numerous professional baseball players, including Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Stars Tim Hudson and Jay Buhner.
Conclusion
Syracuse does not currently have a baseball team, however there is talk of a potential expansion team in the future. The city has been home to many minor league teams in the past, but the last one left in 1998. There has been renewed interest in bringing a team back to Syracuse, and there are several groups working to make this happen. It is unclear when or if a team will be created, but it is something that the city is certainly interested in.
