The history of baseball in Elizabethtown

Baseball in Elizabethtown dates back to the early 19th century, when the game was first introduced to the area by soldiers stationed at Fort Knox. The sport quickly caught on with the local community, and by the late 1800s, there were dozens of amateur teams in the area.

In the early years of baseball in Elizabethtown, games were typically played on makeshift fields with whatever equipment could be cobbled together. This all changed in 1909 when a group of local businessmen founded the Elizabethtown Baseball Association and built a proper ballpark on South Mulberry Street. The newly built facility became the home of the Elizabethtown Grays, a semi-professional team that competed in the Kentucky-Indiana-Tennessee League.

The Grays enjoyed great success in their early years, winning league championships in 1910 and 1912. But despite their on-field success, the team struggled to stay afloat financially and folded after just three seasons. It would be nearly 30 years before baseball would return to Elizabethtown.

In 1940, a newElizabethtown Baseball Association was formed and a team called the Laproys was established. The Laproys played their home games at Athletic Park, a small facility located on West Dixie Avenue. The team was short-lived, however, disbanding after just one season.

It would be another 20 years before baseball would take root in Elizabethtown once again. In 1960, construction began on a new ballpark on West Dixie Avenue, adjacent to where Athletic Park had stood two decades earlier. The ballpark — which would come to be known as Central Hardin Field — opened its doors for business in 1961 with much fanfare.

The new ballpark ushered in a new Era of Baseball in Elizabethtown as it became home to not one but two teams: The Elizabethtown Colts (a semi-professional squad) and Central Hardin High School’s Cardinals (a High School team). For nearly three decades, both teams called Central Hardin Field home and created many lasting memories for fans young and old alike.

Sadly, both teams eventually left Central Hardin Field for greener pastures. The Colts ceased operations after the 1987 season while the Cardinals moved to a new facility built adjacent to Central Hardin high school in 1990. This leftElizabethtown without any organized baseball for nearly 15 years… until 2005 when a group of Cal Baseball enthusiasts decided it was time to bring America’s pastime back to where it all started over 200 years ago.

And so the Elizabethtown Pioneers were born
