Has Any NFL Team Gone Undefeated?

A look at the teams that have come the closest to going an entire NFL season without losing a game.

Introduction

In the National Football League (NFL), there have been two teams that have gone an entire regular season without losing a game. This feat has been accomplished seven times, most recently by the New England Patriots in 2007. The other teams to do it are the Miami Dolphins (1972), the Minneapolis Marines/Los Angeles Rams (1949), the Cleveland Browns ( 1948), the Chicago Bears (1934) and the Green Bay Packers (1929 and 1931).

The 1972 Miami Dolphins

The 1972 Miami Dolphins remain the only NFL team to have gone an entire season without a loss. That year, they went 14-0 in the regular season and then won three more games in the playoffs, including Super Bowl VII, to finish with a perfect 17-0 record.

The 2007 New England Patriots

The 2007 New England Patriots became the first team in NFL history to go undefeated in the regular season since the 1972 Miami Dolphins. The Patriots finished the regular season with a perfect 16-0 record, and went on to win the Super Bowl, making them the only team to ever finish a 19-0 season.

The 2015 Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers went 15-1 in the 2015 NFL regular season, becoming just the fifth team in NFL history to win at least 15 games in a season. The Panthers joined the 1984 San Francisco 49ers, 1985 Chicago Bears, 1998 Denver Broncos and 2004 New England Patriots as the only teams to win 15 or more games in a season.

Conclusion

The 1972 Miami Dolphins remain the only NFL team to go undefeated and win the Super Bowl. In the 48 years since then, no team has been able to match their feat. There have been a few close calls, but ultimately every team has fallen short. The 2007 New England Patriots came the closest, going undefeated in the regular season before losing to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl.
