They are usually presented at a formal ceremony held during the Stanley Cup playoffs, typically in June. The first formal NHL awards were presented at the NHL’s first annual banquet on April 7, 1947, where Babe Pratt of the New York Rangers was named best defenceman and Maurice Richard of the Montreal Canadiens was named best rookie. The majority of the awards were created in 1947 and engraved that year; however, two trophies—the Hart Trophy for most valuable player and the Calder Trophy for best rookie—were first awarded during the 1924–25 NHL season but were not formally engraved until 1947.

The NHL awards were first handed out at a regular season game in 1959. From 1959 to 1967, if no winner was declared for an award then it was not given out that year. In 1967, distinguishing marks were added to identify thereafter which Trophies had not been awarded during a particular season; since then, each unawarded trophy is marked with a small silver band bearing engraved letters denoting that it has not been won (e.g., “unawarded 1967” on the Calder Trophy).
