The Hawks began play in 1946 as one of 17 NBA expansion teams. In their 70-year history, the Hawks have compiled a win–loss record of 2300–3379, won four conference titles, and reached the NBA Finals twice. The franchise has started three All-NBA players (Paul Millsap, Pete Maravich, and Bob Pettit) and one Hall of Famer (Bob Petit).
Early success
The Atlanta Hawks began life in 1946 as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks, one of 17 teams in the newly formed Basketball Association of America. They were based in Moline, Illinois, and played their home games in nearby Rock Island, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa. The Blackhawks won the inaugural BAA championship in 1947, beating the Philadelphia Warriors 4–2 in the best-of-seven final series.
NBA Championships

The Hawks compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Southeast Division. They have played their home games at State Farm Arena since 1999. The team’s origins can be traced to the establishment of the Buffalo Bisons in 1946 in Buffalo, New York, a member of the National Basketball League (NBL) created as a regional basketball league. The Hawks have won four conference titles, including two in Atlanta, and have made one NBA Finals appearance, in 1957.
1957-58 season
During the 1957-58 season, the Hawks had one of the most dominant teams in NBA history. Led by superstar center Bob Pettit, the Hawks won 58 games and lost just 24, giving them a .707 win percentage that was the best in the league. They then went on to cruise through the playoffs, sweeping the St. Louis Hawks in the Finals to win their first ever NBA title.
2014-15 season
The Atlanta Hawks entered the 2014-15 season looking to improve upon their franchise-best 60-win campaign from the previous year. After cruising to the top seed in the Eastern Conference, the Hawks ran into a tough matchup with the eighth-seeded Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the playoffs. The Nets took the series to six games before Atlanta finally prevailed.
In the second round, the Hawks faced another difficult challenge in the form of the Washington Wizards. Again, Atlanta won in six games to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 1970.
In the conference finals, the Hawks ran into a buzzsaw in LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cleveland swept Atlanta en route to their first NBA Finals appearance in franchise history.
So, despite having one of the best regular seasons in franchise history, the Atlanta Hawks were unable to win an NBA Championship during the 2014-15 season.

Since the franchise’s founding in 1946, the Hawks have won four conference championships (one each in 1957, 1958, 1960, and 1970), and have made 27 playoff appearances. In 1968–69, the Hawks achieved their best regular season record with 57 wins and 25 losses. However, they were unable to make it past the Eastern Division Finals that year, losing to the eventual NBA champion Boston Celtics. The following year they won their first division championship since moving to Atlanta two years earlier. In 1970–71 they reached the NBA Finals for the first time ever, but were again defeated by the Celtics in a hard-fought seven-game series. Despite these losses, head coach Cotton Fitzsimmons was named Coach of the Year for his efforts during Atlanta’s remarkable 60-win season.
In 1972–73, led by newly acquired All-Star power forward Walt Bellamy and young All-Star guard Pete Maravich, Atlanta once again reached the NBA Finals. After splitting the first two games at home against Boston, they …
