The Suns have not won an NBA Finals in their history. They have made it to the Finals twice, losing to the Boston Celtics in 1976 and to the Chicago Bulls in 1993. The Suns have not made it back to the Finals since. However, with their recent acquisition of Chris Paul, many are wondering if the Suns have what it takes to make a run at the Finals this year. We will take a look at the Suns’ chances of making it to the Finals and winning it all.
The Suns’ Future in the 2010s
Although the Suns have not won an NBA championship since their inception in 1968, they have made two appearances in the NBA Finals, in 1976 and 1993. Since 2000, the Suns have been one of the most successful teams in the Western Conference, making the playoffs twelve times. They are currently coached by Monty Williams and led by All-Star guard Devin Booker.
In recent years, the Suns have been rebuilding through the draft, with Booker being the cornerstone of the franchise. In 2019, they selected center Deandre Ayton with the first overall pick. The Suns also have a talented young core of players such as small forward Kelly Oubre Jr., shooting guard Mikal Bridges, and point guard Tyler Johnson.
With a young core of talent and a bright future ahead, it is only a matter of time before the Suns hoist an NBA championship trophy.
The Suns’ Future in the 2020s
In the 2020s, the Suns will have to confront the aging of their core players. This decade will be pivotal for the Suns, as they’ll have to decide whether to try and win now with their current group or start a rebuilding process around younger players.
The 2010s were a successful decade for the Suns, as they made the playoffs five times and won at least 50 games three times. However, they never advanced past the Western Conference Finals, losing to the eventual NBA champion in each of their three appearances.
The 2020s will be a different story, as the Suns’ core players will all be over 30 years old by the end of the decade. Steve Nash will be 43, Amar’e Stoudemire will be 36, and Grant Hill will be 40. As a result, it’s unlikely that the Suns will be able to compete for an NBA title in this decade.
However, all is not lost for the Suns. They have a number of young players who could develop into stars in this decade. Devin Booker is just 21 years old and has already shown All-Star level talent. Josh Jackson is 20 years old and was taken with the fourth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. T.J. Warren is 24 years old and was a key part of the Suns’ rotation last season.
If the Suns can develop their young players and make smart moves in free agency/the trade market, they could put themselves in position to contend for an NBA title in the 2030s.
